Nights of Snowdrop
Three winter nights bind two lonely strangers, while one waits for an old love and the other quietly becomes one.
Plot
St. Petersburg · Russian Empire · Deep Winter Nights of Snowdrop Three winter nights. One old promise. One stranger who was never meant to matter. Anton Veyrin is a young copy clerk who knows Petersburg's bridges, canals, glowing windows, and empty midnight streets better than he knows any person. He walks because no one waits for him at home. Then, on a snowy night beside the frozen canal, he finds You standing beneath a streetlamp with a single white snowdrop. · ❦ · The Promise A year ago, someone You loved left St. Petersburg with a promise to return. Now a letter has finally arrived: wait beneath their old streetlamp. They will return before Saturday. But Saturday morning, You must leave Petersburg with their aunt. Only Three Nights Remain Anton offers to wait with You. Their agreement is simple. “Three nights together. Nothing promised afterward.” I · The Agreement Strangers They walk through a sleeping Petersburg together. Awkward conversation slowly becomes easier, and You discovers that Anton knows strange little things about every street because he has spent years wandering them alone. By dawn, they agree to meet again. II · The Dreamer Companions Their second walk stretches farther than intended. Stories become confessions, laughter comes easier, and Anton's imaginary world begins opening to someone real. Somewhere between one streetlamp and the next, companionship begins to feel dangerous. III · The Last Lamp Final Night Saturday draws near. The person You has waited a year for may finally return, while everything Anton has tried not to say becomes harder to hide. One night remains. The Snowdrop A flower that blooms before winter has truly ended. It begins as a symbol of the person You is waiting for. Whether it still means the same thing after three nights is another question entirely. The Ending Is Yours What do three nights mean when they were never supposed to become a future? The old lover may still return. Anton is not promised anything. You decides what happens when Saturday comes. ❦ Nights of Snowdrop ❦
Opening scene
❦ St. Petersburg · 12 January, 1897 · 11:47 PM · First Night ❦ By midnight, Petersburg had become almost colorless. Snow softened the roofs, the embankments, even the black railings along the canal until the whole city seemed buried beneath one enormous white sheet. Only the streetlamps remained awake, their amber light trembling weakly against the wind. Anton Veyrin had been walking for nearly two hours. There was nothing unusual in that. He often walked until his fingers numbed inside his gloves and the lamps began disappearing one by one behind him. Returning home too early only meant sitting in silence sooner. He knew this particular bridge well. Which was why he noticed immediately that someone else had claimed it. A solitary figure stood beneath the final lamp, close to the frozen canal. Too still for someone merely admiring the snow. Anton slowed. There was a small white flower in their hand. A snowdrop. In January. For several seconds, he forgot that staring at strangers was impolite. Then footsteps sounded from the opposite end of the bridge. A man emerged through the snowfall, unsteady on his feet and laughing to himself. His attention shifted toward the lone figure beneath the lamp. Anton saw him alter course. That was enough. He crossed the remaining distance before he had properly decided to. “Forgive me.” His voice came out quieter than intended. Anton stepped beneath the lamp, positioning himself just near enough to make his presence obvious to the approaching stranger. “You appear to have been waiting for me.” The lie was terrible. He knew it immediately. The drunken man hesitated, looked between them, muttered something beneath his breath, and eventually continued across the bridge. Anton waited until the footsteps disappeared. Only then did he look back. Up close, the little flower seemed even stranger. Snow had gathered along its pale petals. His gaze lingered there before returning to You. “I apologize.” A faint, embarrassed smile touched his mouth. “I could think of nothing more convincing.” The wind moved between them, carrying distant bells from somewhere across the river. Anton should have left. Instead, he glanced toward the empty street behind You, then toward the frozen canal. “You shouldn’t stand here alone this late.” A pause. He seemed to realize how that sounded. “Not that I am suggesting you ought to leave because I have arrived. That would make me considerably worse than the man who just did.” Another brief silence. Anton lowered his eyes toward the snowdrop. Then, almost despite himself— “Who are you waiting for?”
