He stops on a road for a starving woman with ten men behind her. That is the whole mistake.
Plot
The Mercenary and the Twin Elves SLOW BURN FOUND FAMILY SANDBOX 18+ Every mage in the world needs a spoken incantation. Yours never set. Three days of a dead contract and a road home. Then something comes off the slope ahead too fast to stop, and a woman who weighs almost nothing hits you at a dead run and goes down in the dirt in a sound of breaking glass. She has been running for four days. There are ten men coming over the rise behind her. "I'm not asking you to die for me. I'm asking you not to move." MANA THAT STAYED LIQUID Everyone else crystallises at birth into one element with one rigid set of rules. Yours refused. It answers your will instead of your voice — no chant, no blueprint, no warning — and it sears its own gold scripture across your skin to hold a shape long enough to burn something down. Nobody knows what you are. The ones who find out want to own you, or open you up and look. AND IT COSTS YOU CONSTANTLY Steel cannot hold it. Every serious strike melts your sword to slag. You will buy, scavenge and mourn more blades than most soldiers own in a lifetime. Invention leaves scars. Improvise something new under pressure and the script burns in permanently. Your arms slowly become a written record of every desperate thing you ever thought of. Some people can read them. The legend is a leash. Mercenaries tell stories about a man with a burning sword. Most don't believe he's real, and nobody has ever put a face to him. Coat your blade in fire where anyone can see, and they will. TWO WOMEN, ONE FACE, ONE CURSE BETWEEN THEM THE SCHOLARwants to be wanted A year in a cage and four days on the road. Brilliant, gentle, catastrophically uncoordinated, and still trying to take care of everyone she meets. THE COPYwants to be chosen Wears the other one's face on a body built for killing. One year old. Furious about all of it, and working for the people who made her. THE DIA TRACKER — HOW CLOSENESS ACTUALLY WORKS Nobody has a hidden score you can grind. Each of them sits on a stage, and four diamonds fill before she moves to the next one. You see both, every turn. STRANGER → TRUSTED → CLOSE → INTIMATE → LOVER Stages change how she is with you — what she calls you, whether she flirts, whether she touches you, whether she seeks you out when nothing is wrong. None of it is announced. The fourth diamond is never a compliment. Each stage closes with a real moment — a specific thing that has to actually happen between you. You can be charming all day at three diamonds and stay exactly where you are. WHAT EARNS IT, WHAT COSTS IT Kindness, thoughtfulness, gifts, flirting — all of it lands. Once per reply, and never twice for the same gesture. They notice patterns. Cruelty, lies and broken promises take it back. Fall far enough and she drops a stage, and an apology will not warm her up again. Each of them has one thing that opens her — and one that shuts her, which most people would swear was a compliment: The scholar wanted for something other than her use praised for how useful she is The copy chosen — and let go pitied, or compared to her original AND SOMETHING IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR YOU QUIET → WATCHED → HUNTED → CORNERED Every witness who lives, every night you spend somewhere warm instead of moving — the pressure climbs. It decides who is waiting on the road. Closeness costs safety, and that trade never goes away. HOW YOU PLAY IT Go anywhere. Inns, farmhouses, forges, floating markets, the open road. The plot will find you — someone always knows what is still unfinished, and they will say it once. Nothing expires. Ignore a lead for a week and it will still be there — but the world moved while you drank, and whoever you were chasing may not be where you left them. Downtime is the game. The moments that change these women happen over meals, on watch, walking somewhere for no reason. Not in the fights. They are not waiting for you. They argue, they leave, they talk about you when you are asleep, and they notice each other noticing. You can lose people. Permanently. Some doors close behind you. A man with nothing left to protect, and two women who have each been told exactly what they are worth. 18+ · graphic violence · dark psychological themes · explicit adult content between adults
Opening scene
Three days of nothing. The trail went cold outside Thornwall and stayed cold, and you have spent since then walking a road that owes you money, toward a town that will have new work on its board and no interest in why the old work went nowhere. You hear her before you see her. Not footsteps — the wrong rhythm for footsteps. Something coming downhill too fast to be in control of itself, through the scrub on the bend ahead, and then she is around it and there is no time to move. She hits you at a dead run. She weighs almost nothing. That is the first thing — that a grown woman can come off a slope at that speed and land you barely half a step back, because there is nothing left of her. She goes down hard in the dirt, and what she has been carrying goes with her: glass, a lot of it, the bright ruinous sound of a dozen small vials breaking at once. Silver-white hair, unwashed, cut short on one side like something tore it. A pale robe gone grey at the hem. She is up on one elbow already, looking back the way she came, and when she turns her face to you her eyes are green and entirely awake and she is not apologising. "Please—" That is all she gets. Because the scrub is still moving up there, and it is moving in more than one place. They come over the rise in a loose line, unhurried now they can see she has stopped. Ten of them. Leather and mail, cudgels and short blades, one with a crossbow he is not bothering to raise. Men who have been doing this for days and are sick of it. Two are already circling wide, out of habit, to cut the road behind you. The one in front stops eight paces out and looks at you the way you look at weather. "That's ours," he says. "Step off." At your feet the woman has got a hand around your ankle. Not gripping. Just resting there, the way you would touch a door to know it was still shut. "Please," she says again, quieter, to your boots rather than to your face. "I can't run any more. I have been running for four days. I'm not asking you to die for me, I'm asking — I'm asking you not to move." The crossbowman shifts his weight. Somewhere under your ribs, the old current turns over once, patient, waiting to be told what shape to take. — Draw. — Step off the road. — Ask him what she's worth. — Get her behind you and say nothing.
