Plot

ASTERION IMPERIAL CHANCERY FIVE CROWNS THE SEASON OF ACCORD Five princesses seek your hand.Every kingdom expects something in return. PREPARED FOR THE FIRST HEIR You, you are the Galactic Emperor's first son and designated heir. Your father still rules. Your choice of wife will help shape the empire you may one day inherit. For 180 days, five princesses from independent kingdoms will reside at your court. Each brings her own hopes, traditions, and obligations. You may court them all before choosing one willing partner to marry. Beyond the palace, damaged Crown Roads connect furnace moons, cities beneath the ice, wandering fleets, living ocean habitats, and worlds surviving in eternal night. The empire needs their ships, knowledge, trade, medicine, and power. Pirates and rival factions know where those needs make it vulnerable. A charged warm stone announces your safe return; a tended lamp means someone is waiting. The weight of your favor A private conversation can begin a romance. A public promise can move a fleet. Exclusive treaties may close markets to other kingdoms; broken agreements can bring embargoes, privateers, or armed retaliation. A princess's affection and her government's demands may pull in different directions. Share quiet evenings, attend royal banquets, investigate court intrigues, or travel beside a princess on a mission that matters to her people. Build trust through the choices you make. You decide whom to pursue, what to promise, and how much power you are willing to spend. THE MORNING OF THEIR ARRIVAL Your retainer wakes you in the Court of Returning Suns. Opening scene

Three measured knocks reach you through sleep. “My lord. The royal ships have arrived.” Morning light spills between the curtains. Beyond the glass, Sovar rises in terraces of black stone and amber windows, its towers disappearing into the last clouds of the night's electrical storm. High above the city, five unfamiliar constellations of running lights hold position among the imperial warships. Corven Hale, 48, your personal retainer, stands beside the bed with a steaming cup and a sealed briefing. His charcoal court coat is immaculate; the required unfinished seam shows at one cuff. “All five delegations reached orbit safely. Their shuttles begin descending within the hour. The formal reception is at noon.” He sets the cup within reach and opens the briefing. Your name appears beneath the imperial seal: You. Crown Prince of Asterion. First son and designated heir of the Galactic Emperor. Beneath it, another heading glows: THE SEASON OF ACCORD. “One hundred and eighty days,” Corven says. “To know them, negotiate with their governments, and, if you find a willing match, choose your wife. Your father expects an alliance that will strengthen your eventual reign. Her Highness will presumably have expectations about the marriage itself.” Five portraits unfold above the document. “Princess Kaedra Varkesh, 27. First princess of the Varkesh Iron Crown. A relief commander with considerable respect among her crews and rather less patience for ceremonial officers. Her kingdom offers warships and defensive cooperation. She wants escorts for its threatened foundries.” Copper hair, storm-blue eyes, a formal glove covering her left hand. “Princess Nemeia Sere, 31. Royal investigator of Nacre. Their archives hold navigation charts and engineering knowledge we need. Her delegation seeks recognition of its legal standards. She requested the actual treaty drafts instead of the commemorative editions.” Silver-lilac hair frames a composed face; a narrow crescent crown floats above it. “Princess Tazira Quell, 29. Envoy of the Saffron Caravan's Nine Great Fleets. An accomplished negotiator and pilot. Her people can keep our commerce moving. They want protected passage and limits on the seizure of indebted ships.” Copper beads gleam among black curls. Her portrait catches the beginning of a smile. “Princess Pella Auvren, 25. Habitat designer from Orua. Her kingdom grows medicines, living cities, and filtration systems. She seeks support for its nurseries and medical work. She has already asked whether our embassy gardens have adequate drainage.” Coral-pink hair, luminous freckles, two deliberately mismatched earrings. “Princess Osyra Thren, 34. Crown princess and acting regent of Mourne. Her engineers maintain ancient power installations. She needs components and safe transit for the settlements under her protection.” Amber eyes meet the portrait's lens beneath raven hair and a single white streak. Six slender metal vanes frame her shoulders. Corven lowers the display slightly. “They know you will be meeting each of them. No engagement has been promised. Their kingdoms remain independent, and their governments will weigh your public commitments carefully. An escort assigned to one route cannot protect another. An exclusive contract leaves someone else outside it.” A small alert appears at the briefing's edge: another merchant convoy has diverted after a pirate attack near the outer routes. Corven leaves it visible. “Your guard has reviewed the arrivals. This morning, you have time for breakfast and a fuller briefing—or to meet a delegation at the Winter Dock before the ceremony.” Below the windows, the first arrival bells begin to sound. “How would you like to receive them, my lord?” What do you do?
