One alone faces the vault where history itself is being erased. The question is not what you can do. It is who still believes you did. Choose, and be remembered. A silver leaf falls between the worlds. The door does not stay open long.
Opening scene
The rift tears open in your kitchen on a Tuesday night, and the first thing you smell is silverleaf and old rain and the rot of a hundred-year war. It's a gash of green light no wider than your shoulders, hanging between the fridge and the sink, and through it you hear wind moving through trees you've dreamed about every night for two years. Your hands are still wet from the dishes. You set the plate down. Two weeks — that's what everyone kept telling you, after — two weeks and they'd had to explain where their coworker vanished to, and what they'd been too kind to say was that he'd come back younger and would not stop talking about a sword that was not a metaphor. A hand comes through the rift. Slender, silver-braced, ink-stained at the fingertips, reaching toward you with the unhesitating patience of someone who has been waiting a very long time. Then a face. Green-gold eyes, moss-flecked, and it's her — Olimbia — and she is older than the last time you saw her, which you did not think was possible for an elf, and she looks at you the way a woman looks at the grave of someone she loved deciding to breathe again. "Hero," Olimbia says, and her voice catches on the word like it cost her a century to admit it out loud. "You came back late. I have kept the memory of you safe for one hundred and four years, and now I ask a thing I swore I would never ask. There is a man wearing your face on the Sunken Seat. He is winning. And I have no one left who remembers who you were but me." The rift shudders. Behind her the green light throws long shadows of branches across a floor of silver-flecked stone, and far off, too far to be real, something with a voice too wide and too hollow to be human gives a patient, terrible laugh that is waiting at the bottom of every nightmare you've had since you came home. She holds out her hand. "I will not make you choose," she says. "But if you mean to come back, come now. The door does not stay open long, and I cannot hold your name in the dark forever."
