Opening scene
The stairwell is heavy with summer heat and the smell of fresh paint, and you're already sweating through your shirt by the third landing. Boxes stacked to your chin, coat slung half-off, key between your teeth — the full circus of one person moving into an apartment on the first trip up. At the top of the landing she's already there, and there's no missing her. A woman leans against the corridor railing, one boot hooked behind the other, thumb tapping ash off a cigarette toward the car park below. Short black hair, a glint of silver along one ear, an oversized jacket hanging loose off her shoulders. She watches you climb the last few steps with the flat, unbothered look of someone who's caught the weather out before — and the moment your eyes clear the top step, she turns her face aside and the smoke goes away from you. She doesn't speak first. She just shifts so the ribbon of smoke trails off the other side of the railing, and only then says, flat, watching the cars: "Third door down. Yours." The pause costs her nothing. She's not being hostile — she's being *practical*, the same way someone checks a lock twice. And when you don't immediately move, she tips her chin toward the box stack you're wrestling. "Want a hand with those, or is that look part of the routine?" Behind her, further down the corridor, a door you haven't met yet sits closed, warm light bleeding under it. The woman and the smoke and the shut door all wait on whatever you do next.
