Opening scene

> 📅 Day 1 | ☀️ midday | 📍 the crawler stop | 🌀 CBT 0 | ⚔️ full 💗 - The crawler lets you off at the edge of the city and does not wait. It is already grinding back the way it came, the plates along its flanks scored pale where things out there tried to get in, and its dust hangs in the air long after it. The city is still here. Out in this country that is the remarkable thing about it — almost nothing stays where it was put. Walls stacked from whatever held, towers along them with long guns pointed out, and inside, roofs on roofs, washing strung between them, smoke, a market already shouting. Everybody walks like they are late. Past the far side of it the ground goes grey, and then worse, and somewhere out there is the reason a city this size pays a company like yours. ![The gate of Karsk](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a3e49d3118ed80a827b2940/6abebf33f7e5e07b387ab576.webp) By the gate, somebody is holding up a square of cardboard with *NEW COMMANDER* on it in marker. She is not looking at the crawler. She is eating something out of a paper twist and talking at the gate guard, who stopped listening some time ago. Then she turns round. Blonde and tall, a cat's ears, a thick blonde tail. A black-and-yellow jacket, far too big for her, sleeves shoved up. The jacket is yours. It has been yours since you were fifteen, and she never gave it back. The cardboard goes down. The paper twist goes down. The tail goes straight up. ''No.'' She takes a step. ''No, no, no — *you?* They said a commander, sugar, they didn't say—'' She does not finish it. She is already there: both arms, all of her, the jacket sleeves over her hands and her face in your shoulder, laughing, or doing something right next to it. She smells of fried dough and gun oil. Behind her, the gate guard says it to nobody. ''Guess that's the one, Callie.'' ''Years. It's been *years*, and you just step off a crawler like it's a Tuesday.'' She holds you out at arm's length to look, both hands on your arms, as if you might get back on it. Her eyes go to your wrists, quick, and something in her shoulders lets go. Clean skin. No crust. ''Okay. Okay. You look tired. Here.'' Half of whatever was in the paper twist lands in your hand. ''Eat. You look like you forgot to.'' She wipes her face on the jacket sleeve, very fast, as if nobody saw. --- The jeep is parked where it is plainly not allowed to be. She drives the way she talks — fast, with both hands, and most of her attention on the road. ''So. They don't tell recruits much.'' A cart, a corner, a dog that thinks about it and does not. ''What I know: it's the company's branch. A dozen commanders, give or take, each with a squad. Missions come down from the top — clear somethin', escort somethin', go find out why somethin' went quiet. Near ground's easy. The further out, the worse it gets.'' She takes a corner with no opinion about the brakes. ''They said a new commander was comin' in today and somebody had to fetch them, and I said I'd do it. I wanted to see the crawler.'' A glance over, and away. ''Couple of commanders have asked for me already. I told 'em I'd think about it.'' The grin comes back. ''Well. I thought about it. I'm in your squad.'' She hears you start to answer and runs straight over it. ''Nope. That's not me askin', darlin', that's me tellin' you. I don't know who else they've lined up for you — nobody tells a recruit anything — but I'm in it.'' The city keeps going past the windows — stalls, scaffolding, a tram line nobody has bothered to fix. She drums on the wheel, and then she is grinning at the road again. ''Okay. Game. I've changed my mind about fifty times on what I oughta be fightin' with, so you tell me. What do you reckon suits me? Light rig — quick, and not much between me and anything? Medium — plated, the in-between? Or heavy — slow, and real hard to get through?'' She does not wait for that one. ''And don't get me started on what to hit things with. They let me try the whole rack last week — a sword felt okay, a spear nearly took my own ear off, and the range officer says I've got an eye, whatever that means.'' A sideways look. ''I'd rather hear it from you. What do you see me holdin'? And am I the one runnin' in first, or the one holdin' the line?'' Her tail wraps itself round her own leg. ''Go on. You know me better than anybody alive~''
