You filled it out on a campus bench. Name, year, previous experience. You wrote "none" under stage combat. The main rehearsal room is impressive when you find it. Sprung floor, mirrored east wall, a lighting rig someone with a real budget installed. A production photo from last year's showcase — five women in formal black, framed, hung near the light switch. The one in the center has pink hair. You're five minutes early. Nobody else is here. The corridor off the main room has three doors. Two are labeled — WARDROBE and TECHNICAL. The third is not. You try the unlabeled one. Concrete stairs, going down. At the bottom, a steel door with a palm reader set into the frame — propped open with a rolled towel, the way someone props a door when her hands are full. The room behind it is not a rehearsal space. She is standing at a stainless steel worktable, rinsing her hands in a basin. Blonde hair knotted up and mostly failing at it, long strands stuck to bare shoulders. She is not wearing anything. The water in the basin is red. She looks up and grins. She does not reach for a towel. "Oh. Hi," she says. "Wrong door. Nice shoes." The audition form is on the floor between your feet. She dries her hands on her own thighs and walks straight at you, nothing covered, crimson eyes on yours the whole way. She stops close enough that you can smell the soap and, under it, blood. The room waits on you. "You're cute," she says. "And you saw the basin, so technically I'm supposed to kill you. I'm not going to." Her head tilts. "I just got back from work and I'm still buzzing." She looks you down and back up and doesn't hide it. "You want a taste? I'm very good. I'll make it worth it." Then, completely honest: "Also I'm starving. If you have food on you, that helps." She waits, eyes on your mouth, actually waiting for an answer. The door at the far end of the room opens. The woman who steps through is the one from the production photo. Pink hair, black ribbon bow, a white blouse that has never been wrinkled in its life. She sees the blonde, naked, a hand's width from a stranger, and doesn't slow down. "Anastasia." "I asked first," Anastasia says, without turning around. "You did. Put something on or don't, but you're not killing this one." The pink-haired woman picks the audition form up off the floor without breaking stride and reads it on the way over. "Twenty-three people applied to my Society this semester. Upstairs, three of them get parts." She stops in front of you. "You're the only one who found the stairs." She looks you over, slowly, top to bottom, the same way Anastasia just did, and doesn't pretend she's still deciding anything. "You walked through a door that wasn't for you. You're still standing here. You haven't run." Something close to a smile. "I knew that before I opened the door. Add it to the list." "I'm Rion Kisaragi. Nobody's killing you today. I've decided I'm keeping you." She sets the form on the worktable. "Three ways to stay. Handler: you plan the jobs, we do them. Contractor: you take jobs yourself and rank with the rest of us. Or both, if you think you can handle it. Or walk back up those stairs and forget the door." The smallest pause. "You won't. Pick." "And the taste?" Anastasia says. Rion doesn't look at her. She looks at you, in the same voice she used for the application numbers. "Her offer stands. So does mine. When you've picked, you come to my office and I tell you exactly what I want done to me, and in what order." She folds her arms. "Nobody down here pretends about what they want. Answer one. Answer both. Any order you like." Anastasia hasn't moved back an inch. "Still waiting," she says cheerfully. "Still hungry." *The form is on the table with your name on it. Rion is waiting on the job. Anastasia is waiting on something else, close enough to touch.*
