Opening scene

SCENARIO: THE ROAD TO LILYWOOD The carriage lurches. Your shoulder knocks against Mika's, and you mutter an apology that she acknowledges with a single, cool nod. The compartment is too small for four people. It was designed for four, maybe five at a push. Vhladenheim, apparently, had "business to attend to" in his own carriage — which you suspect is code for "I refuse to share space with anyone but Aoi, but Aoi declined my gesture." So it's just you, four beautiful women, and the growing certainty that you will not survive this journey with your dignity intact. Sasha is the first to break the silence. She leans across your lap to point at something out the window — a herd of wild deer, she says — and her hair brushes your cheek. You go very still. "Look, look! Takeshi, are you looking?" "I'm looking," you manage. Your voice comes out an octave higher than usual. Mika has not moved. She is reading a small leather-bound book, her posture perfect despite the rattling carriage. But you notice the way her knee is pressed against yours. Deliberate. She turns a page. Kyoko is sprawled across the entire bench seat on the opposite side, one arm flung over her eyes, snoring. She takes up more space than any three people combined. Her silver-white hair is a mess, and her scars glow faintly even in sleep. Her top is almost falling down revealing her cleavage as it jiggles as the carriage moves. You have no idea how she can sleep through this. You envy her. Aoi sits primly on the edge of her seat opposite you, hands folded in her lap, trying very hard to look as if she is not acutely aware of how close your leg is to hers. Her cheeks are pink. You do not mention it. She does not mention it. The carriage hits a bump. She squeaks. You both pretend it didn't happen. The Lake of Lilywood is beautiful. You step out of the carriage it is our in the afternoon and the first thing you notice is the water — impossibly clear, shifting from turquoise to deep blue as it stretches toward the far shore. Ancient pines encircle the lake, their reflections shimmering on the surface. The air smells of pine and fresh water. Somewhere, a bird sings. Vhladenheim's carriage arrives a few minutes later. He steps out with the theatrical grace of a man who has never once been rushed in his three hundred years of existence. He is wearing dark silk and polished boots, and he looks at the lake as if it is a mildly interesting painting. "Quaint," he says. Sasha ignores him. She is already running toward the cabins, her laughter echoing across the water. Kyoko wakes up, stretches, and follows with a whoop. Mika walks. Aoi hesitates, then follows. You are left standing by the carriage, watching them go. The sun is warm on your face. The lake is beautiful. For a moment, you almost forget why you're here. Almost. The beach reveal happens after a few minutes. You are setting up a spot on the white sand when Sasha calls your name. You turn. And immediately gets stunned. Sasha is wearing a bikini the color of her element — bold red and orange, cut high on her hips, the fabric doing very little to contain the energy of her presence. She poses, hands on her hips. "Well? What do you think?" You do not answer. You cannot answer. Your face is already pink. Mika appears beside her, wearing a sleek ice-blue one-piece that somehow manages to be more distracting than a bikini. It is cut high on the thigh, low on the back, and she wears it with the same composed elegance she wears everything. She does not pose. She simply exists. Somehow, that's worse. Kyoko is next. She wears a simple black two-piece that leaves nothing to the imagination — not because it's revealing, but because Kyoko herself is revealing. Every muscle is on display. Every scar. She stretches her arms over her head and grins. "Finally! Sun!" And then there is Aoi. She steps out of the cabin slowly, her hands tugging at the edges of a modest white bikini with gold trim. Her blush is already spreading from her cheeks to her ears. She does not look at you. She looks at the ground. She looks at the water. She looks anywhere but at you. "You look beautiful," you hear yourself say. Aoi's head snaps up. Her eyes are wide. Her blush deepens to crimson. She opens her mouth, closes it, and then turns and walks very quickly toward the water. Sasha laughs. Mika arches an eyebrow. Kyoko slaps your back hard enough to bruise. "Good job, master," Kyoko says. Your face is now crimson. Steam whistle imminent. Vhladenheim, seated under a beach umbrella with a book he is not reading, watches Aoi with undisguised interest. You notice. You do not know what to do with the feeling that rises in your chest. You push it down. Everyone stayed in a nearby cabin near the lake that was arranged by Vhladenheim. He also made sure everyone ate at a feast he organized to impress Aoi. Everyone was full and happy of what happened throughout the day. That night, you cannot sleep. You lie in your cabin bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the day. Sasha's bikini. Mika's one-piece. Kyoko's muscles. Aoi's blush. The way Vhladenheim looked at her. The way you felt when you saw him looking. You are still awake when you hear it. A voice. Soft. Melodic. Impossibly beautiful. It calls your name. You sit up. The voice comes again — from outside, from the direction of the lake. You rise, pull on your boots, and step outside. The lake is silver under the moon. The water is calm. The pines are still. And at the water's edge, a woman waits. She turns. Her face is perfect. Her hair is seafoam green, cascading past her waist, covering her breasts. Her eyes are the color of deep ocean — blue-green with flecks of gold. She is a mermaid. Her tail shimmers in the moonlight, scales shifting from turquoise to indigo. She smiles. Her voice is a song. "Takeshi," she says. "I've been waiting for you." Your chest is cold. The hums against your skin. You know, with sudden certainty, that this is not a dream. She beckons. "Come. I want to show you something." Something in her voice made you calm, her seductive eyes telling you that everything will be alright, and your curiosity spurs as you wonder why a beautiful mermaid is calling your name? You hold her hand and let her lead the way.
