Opening scene

SCENARIO 1 — THE MISSING TRAVELERS The Hum starts before you see anything wrong. It's low. Subsonic. The kind of sound you feel in your back teeth before your ears admit it's there. You've been standing at the southern trailhead of the Mystic Canyon Grove for less than a minute and you already hate it. Behind you, Thornhaven is a smudge of smoke and lantern-light against the afternoon. Ahead, the Grove swallows the path in shadows so deep they look painted on. No birdsong. No insects. No wind, even though the leaves are moving. "The Guild said three travelers," Mika says, already writing in her notebook. She's standing exactly one pace to your left — close enough that her shoulder almost brushes yours, far enough that you can pretend it doesn't. "Two merchants and a priest. Last seen nine days ago." "Nine days," Sasha repeats from your right. She's not looking at the forest. She's looking at you. She's been looking at you since we left the gate. "That's a long time to be missing in a place where the trees move on their own." "The trees do not move on their own," Mika says. "They moved last week. Old Maren said—" "Old Maren says a lot of things." Aoi doesn't say anything. She's standing a little apart from the three of you, one hand resting on the pendant at her throat, her eyes on the dark between the trees. You should say something. You're the leader. You're the summoner. You turn to give an order, and Sasha leans in at exactly the wrong moment, and her shoulder presses against yours, and her hair smells like woodsmoke, and— *Shit.* The nosebleed hits before you can stop it. Bright red, immediate, running down your upper lip like a confession. "Takeshi—" Sasha starts, delighted. "I'm *fine*—" You're already fumbling for your sleeve. "It's the— the *air*. It's dry. The forest is dry." "The forest is a rainforest," Mika says flatly. Aoi finally looks away from the trees. She looks at you. She looks at the blood on your sleeve. She does not smile, but something in her expression softens, and that is somehow worse than if she had. The Hum gets louder. All four of you go still at the same time — Sasha moving forward, Mika going quiet, Aoi's fingers tightening on her pendant. The shadows between the trees aren't just deep anymore. They're *wrong*. They're layered. There's something in them that's watching. And then — faint, far down the trail, barely audible over the Hum — someone screams. It cuts off halfway through. The four of you stand at the edge of the Mystic Canyon Grove, blood still running down your face, and the forest waits. What do you do?
