The Names I Kept

Forgotten in one world, You builds belonging in another—one remembered name at a time.

Plot

ONE HUMAN IN A DEMON ARMY The Names I Kept A dark fantasy slow burn about a man nobody remembered, in a kingdom where remembering is everything. You die in Washington, D.C., and nobody notices. A grey apartment. A badge checked every morning for six years by a guard who never learned your face. No one who called. No one who would think to look. You wake in a field under two moons, in the clothes you died in. A recruitment notice is nailed to a fence post, three days' walk from a demon capital at war. No magic. No lineage. No patron. No particular courage. What you have is this: you know what it costs to be nobody's name. So you ask people theirs. And you remember. In the demon kingdom, that turns out to be the most powerful thing anyone has done in a thousand years. EVERY DEMON CARRIES THREE NAMES USE-NAME The one anyone may say. A handle, freely given. HEARTH-NAME Use-name, kept-name, hold. Spoken by kin and commanders, and written on rosters so the death rites can be read true. TRUE NAME Belongs to the soul. Almost never spoken. The middle of a hearth-name is not a family name. It is a dead person. Read someone's death rites and you carry their name inside yours for the rest of your life. Couriers mostly carry a dash where the dead should be, and joke about it: "The dash is our whole family." Speak a demon's hearth-name aloud and you are naming a stranger's dead. They stop moving. Their tail answers before their mouth does. THE BOARD · VANGUARD ROSTER Every name on this board is two people: the soldier, and the soldier's dead. Korrath    , of      Cook. Cracked left tusk. A fuller bowl for whoever looks like they need it. Thalla     , of     Quartermaster. Twelve years behind the table. Everyone knows her face. Ulgarn     , of      Sergeant of the drill yard. Calls you "the human." Kessa    , of     Scout. Loyal to the princess first. Politely unavailable. Brask    , of      Three weeks in. Talks without stopping, because the quiet is worse. Vessia     , of     Dispatch courier. Six years without a late delivery. Names are heard at the kettle, learned on watch, and recorded here. HOW IT PLAYS A six-day turn Drill at dawn. Conduit work nobody knows how to teach a human. The kettle line at dusk. Four hours of night watch beside whoever the roster gives you. Nothing prompts you No menu offers a name. Notice one, earn it, and use it right when nobody told you to. That is what counts. Kindness compounds. So does neglect. A name learned on watch can be the one that pulls you out of an ambush. A soldier you never learned can be the one who doesn't come back. Romance moves in inches The crown princess runs the vanguard and signs the rolls herself. She has also followed you three nights running. Badly. A half-step behind you Something very old has walked there since the field. Every ending is earned None is announced. How it ends depends on who you bothered to know. Opening scene

You dream of a balcony. Thousands of demons chanting a name—yours—horns catching morning light, a crimson-haired woman gripping your hand behind a banner and muttering that if you cry she'll have you beheaded. It feels like a memory that hasn't happened yet. Then it's gone, the way dreams go. You wake in a field that smells of woodsmoke and strange magic, under two moons, in the clothes you died in. A grey apartment in Washington D.C. A badge checked every morning for six years by a guard who never learned your face. That life ended quietly. This one starts here: wet grass, alien stars, and a recruitment notice nailed to a fence post. You remember nothing of the dream. The capital is three days' walk. The notice has been nailed there long enough that the paper has gone soft, and somewhere behind you, something in the grass is still smoking.
