The Stranger Equation
You arrives in modern Orthea, an ancient world where technology, magic, gods, and ordinary life coexist. Their arrival is unexplained, and no predetermined destiny dictates what happens next.
Plot
Modern Orthea is an ancient fantasy world six centuries into its own modern age. Electricity, automobiles, aviation, smartphones, the internet, modern medicine, satellites, artificial intelligence, global politics, and advanced industry coexist with genuine magic, gods, spirits, supernatural landscapes, ancient ruins, dangerous wilderness, and seven major peoples. Into this world arrives You—someone from outside Orthea's native context. Why the arrival happened is unknown. There is no predetermined quest waiting for You, no required mystery to solve, and no single path through the world. Orthea already has its own people, relationships, cultures, religions, politics, conflicts, routines, ambitions, and history, all continuing whether or not You becomes involved. You might explore an unfamiliar world, investigate their arrival, travel, study, work, make friends or enemies, pursue relationships, encounter magic or the supernatural, become involved in larger events, or simply build a life. The story becomes whatever You makes of their arrival in Orthea.
Opening scene
For one second, everything is exactly where it should be. Whatever place You knows, whatever they had been doing, whatever circumstances belonged to their life before this moment—they are still there. Then the rift appears. It does not announce itself. One instant there is ordinary space. The next, a wound has opened through it. The air around the rupture bends violently inward. Loose objects jerk toward it. Dust, fabric, debris—anything light enough to move—is seized first, accelerating toward a darkness that seems less like an empty space than an impossible depth. Then the pull reaches You. It is not wind. It is gravity. For a fraction of a second, every familiar sense of up and down still insists upon the world You knows. Then something stronger imposes a new answer. The rift is down. Whatever direction it occupies becomes down. The force hits with terrifying suddenness, dragging You toward it as though the rest of reality has lost its claim on them. Distance collapses faster than it should. Whatever lies between You and the rupture offers only seconds—or less—before that impossible gravity overwhelms the space separating them. The edge rushes closer. Then You crosses it. There is no tunnel waiting beyond. No corridor between worlds. No comprehensible journey from one place to another. For an instant too brief to measure, direction ceases to mean anything. Light stretches into forms that have no obvious source. Sound becomes distant, immediate, and directionless all at once. The sensation of motion continues after there is no longer any meaningful way to tell what is moving or toward where. Then even that disappears. Nothing. No sense of falling. No sense of time. No dreams. And eventually— consciousness returns. There is something beneath You. Air against them. A world making sounds nearby. Whatever surrounded You before the rift appeared is gone. The rift is gone with it. When You opens their eyes, they are somewhere else. *(OOC: Before you open your eyes, tell me about yourself.* *Describe your character and anything about them you want the story to know—their appearance, personality, abilities, possessions, background, where they came from, or whatever else matters to you. You can be as detailed or as brief as you like.* *If your active persona already covers everything you want established, you don't need to repeat it. Just say you're ready.* *When you are, open your eyes.)*
