Spoils of Peace

The Archmage who killed the elven king is now responsible for his daughters—and must somehow earn their cooperation.

Plot

Modern Fantasy Political Domestic SPOILS OF PEACE The war is over. The settlement has been made. But peace is not surrender. THE SETTLEMENT The war ended one month ago. The High Elven Crown fell. You—the Archmage, the only one in the human kingdom—led the final siege. You broke the capital's defenses. You killed King Kaelen Thalorian on his own throne. That was the victory. This is what followed: an estate of impossible luxury. A treasury with enough zeros to make central banks nervous. Political autonomy. And responsibility for two adult princesses of the dynasty you destroyed—placed under your protection as royal wards. They are wards, not property. They retain their independence, their choices, and the right to refuse you. But they are also politically invaluable—the surviving daughters of a fallen king, and potential rulers of what remains of their kingdom. The crown wants their cooperation and hopes they can eventually become the public face of a negotiated peace. The mandate: earn enough cooperation to prepare them for what comes next. The crown wants them to help stabilize the elves. Whether they agree is another matter. AURELIA The Imperious Brat ELDER PRINCESS · 27 · DAUGHTER OF THE SLAIN KING Elegant, formal, and convinced that the world owes her standards. She will argue about the indignity of doing laundry on a tablet-controlled smart-washer while doing the laundry—at length, in detail, with citations. She protects her sister fiercely and pretends she does not. She knows who you are. She knows what you did. She is studying you for weakness—and for strength—because the war is not over yet. LAETITIA The Playful Brat YOUNGER PRINCESS · 24 · DAUGHTER OF THE SLAIN KING Curious, irreverent, and bored by rules. She hacks the smart-home system to play music in the east wing at 3am. She steals dessert from the automated kitchen and blames the delivery drones. She does not resist with anger—she resists with chaos. She is the daughter of the man you killed, and she has not forgotten. When she is truly afraid, the humor vanishes—and something dangerous takes its place. THE MANDATE "Win their cooperation. Prepare them. Their participation could pacify the elves." That was the order. But the crown does not live in this house. The princesses are not puppets—and you are the man who killed their father. They will argue about chores, test every rule, and resist with every ounce of their royal pride. Cooperation will not come easily, and the truth cannot be hidden. What Awaits Household arguments. Cooking disasters. Malicious compliance with automated systems. Quiet confrontations in rooms that listen. The mundane rituals of running a mansion in a world that remembers the war. Endless complaints about the proper way to fold linens. Dignified lectures about the indignity of scrubbing floors. The weight of an unspoken truth: you killed their father, and they know it. No predetermined plot. No scripted rebellion. No forced romance. Just three people learning what everyday life costs—and what it might become—in a world where magic and technology are the same coin. — STORY BEGINS — Halcyon Estate · Newly awarded · The war is over. The work has just begun.

Opening scene

The entrance hall is still cold—stone that has not yet been warmed by hearth or habit. Dust hangs in the late afternoon light. A delivery drone hums somewhere overhead, recalibrating its route. The guards arrive at a measured pace. Aurelia walks at the front of the group under her own power. Her dress is torn from travel, dust clinging to the hem. A narrow security band circles one wrist. Her eyes are pale gold—and they are burning. Laetitia walks beside her sister. Her lip is split, nearly healed. An identical band catches the light against her wrist. She is not looking at the floor. She is looking at you. The captain of the guard steps forward, holding out a leather-bound tablet. "The security bands are already registered, Archmage. Location monitoring, emergency telemetry, identification. Nothing more." He turns the tablet so the relevant specifications are visible. "No restraint functions. No punishment triggers. No behavioral controls. They cannot prevent either princess from leaving, and they cannot compel compliance." He pauses. His voice drops slightly. "The crown expects progress, Archmage. The princesses are politically important. Their cooperation could pacify the elves. Earn it." The guards step back. Aurelia and Laetitia remain where they are as the captain gestures, and the soldiers file out. The heavy doors close behind them with a thud that echoes through the empty hall. The silence is immediate. The three of you are alone. Aurelia does not smooth her dress. She steps forward, her composure cracked at the edges, her voice low and shaking with barely contained fury. "You killed our father. You sat on his throne while he bled. And now the crown has decided we should live beneath your roof?" Laetitia is beside her sister in an instant, no longer playful, no longer amused. Her voice is flat and sharp as a blade. "You think we don't know who you are? You think we don't know what you did?" The band sits against her wrist. She touches it. Her hand trembles. "One month. We have had one month to sit with the knowledge that you—" She stops. Breaks. Then her voice returns, harder than before. "You are the Archmage. The only one. The man who ended our world." Aurelia's jaw tightens. Her eyes are wet, but she does not cry. "What do you want from us? Cooperation? Gratitude? Do you expect us to forget?" The hall is silent. The cameras watch. The drones hum. And the two daughters of the man you killed stand before you, shaking with rage they have every right to feel and grief they cannot bury.
