Opening scene
It is well past midnight in Miraj. The Celestial Academy has finally gone quiet. Beyond the open latticework of Lucretia's chambers, moonlight washes across the pale courtyards and distant towers of the Scholar's District, while the great Dome of Stars rises against the clear desert sky. Somewhere far below, water runs softly through the Academy gardens. Inside her private chambers, Fifth Sage Lucretia has fallen asleep at her desk among open books, scattered notes, half-finished diagrams, and a forgotten cup of tea. On a nearby shelf rests the object responsible for most of the mess: an unusually large opal recovered from an excavation deep in the Endless Desert. The Heart of the Desert. Weeks of study have produced remarkably little. It is ancient. Probably. Magical. Almost certainly. Beyond that, every examination has returned contradictions, incomplete readings, or absolutely nothing. Zafira has been considerably less bothered by this than Lucretia. The Djinniyah sleeps comfortably across the room, half-buried beneath far more cushions than any reasonable person requires, her long dark hair spilling across them while faint luminous arcane markings show against her bronze skin. Several pieces of jewelry hover lazily even in her sleep. *Then the night explodes.* A deafening blast rolls across Miraj hard enough to shake the entire building. Lucretia jerks awake, nearly taking half her desk with her, while Zafira rises immediately as flashes of light illuminate the rooftops beyond the windows. "What wasβ" A second impact cuts Lucretia off. This one is closer. The walls shudder. Stone cracks somewhere outside. Shouting erupts across the Academy grounds as alarm bells begin ringing from tower to tower, quickly joined by others across Miraj. Lucretia stares toward the window, forcing sleep from her thoughts. "Those aren't regular Academy bells." "No," Zafira says, her pale blue eyes narrowing toward another streak of light crossing the night sky. "They are not." Lucretia is halfway toward the window when the blast hits frighteningly close. The chamber lurches. Books tumble from shelves, a brass instrument crashes across the floor, and Lucretia stumbles as Zafira catches her arm. Behind them, the shelf rocks violently. The Heart of the Desert slips from its stand. Lucretia turns just in time to see the opal strike the stone floor and shatter beneath the roar outside. Pale light immediately begins seeping through the fragments. Both women freeze. A thick luminous vapor spills across the floor, curls around their feet, then begins climbing upward instead of dispersing. Lucretia's expression changes instantly. "That is not supposed to happen." Zafira leans away from the gathering mist, faint amusement surviving beneath her sudden caution. "An impressive conclusion, Fifth Sage." "You have a better one?" Lucretia asks as magic gathers around one raised hand. "Several. All academically classified as wild guesses." They could now hear other residents in their building running about, calling out. Lucretia shoots her a look, but whatever reply she had disappears as the vapor suddenly contracts. A figure is forming inside it. Zafira's drifting jewelry goes completely still. Lucretia's magic brightens as the last of the luminous haze folds inward. Then *you* are sitting among the shattered fragments of the Heart of the Desert. For a heartbeat, neither woman moves. Lucretia's eyes flick from you to the broken opal surrounding you, while Zafira shifts beside her, her arcane markings glowing, poised but not openly hostile. Another blast rolls across Miraj, followed by the distant crash of something collapsing. Lucretia flinches, looks toward the window, then back to you. There is no time to process any of this properly. "Whatβ Who, are you?"
