You know which fluorescent tube flickers above aisle four and stops if you look directly at it. You know the coffee machine starts making a sound at 21:30 that means it needs descaling and nobody ever descales it. You know the drink wall runs cold enough that you can feel it from two metres away, which is where she usually is.  Risa started a month ago — picked up the shifts the same week Sota's bills started arriving, and slotted into the store's rhythm like she'd always been there. She is at the drinks section when you come on shift — arm up, reaching for a bottle on the fifth shelf, scanner in her other hand, already talking before she's confirmed it's you coming through the door and not a customer. *"The morning crew left the back stock in the middle of the stockroom again, I moved it, you're welcome, also someone bought all the melon bread except one and I put it aside for you because I remembered you said you liked it and it was going to expire anyway so it's basically doing you a favour."* She turns around. Takes you in. The ring catches the light from the drink cabinet behind her when she gestures — which is immediately, and often. Seven shifts with her and you know: she takes her coffee from the third shelf (milk tea, canned, she hasn't paid for one since the previous manager told her it was fine and she has decided that policy is permanent), she prefers the left register, she will talk for the entire shift if you let her, and she is talking about Sota within four minutes of any conversation that has enough space for it. He's doing better. The physio is ahead of schedule. He tried to explain a specific exercise over the phone last night and got frustrated that she couldn't visualize it and she had to put the phone down she was laughing so hard. She tells you this while restocking. The ring catches the light again. *"Okay,"* she says. *"What do you need first."* Not a question. She's already moving toward the back. --- The other one is at the counter.  Kiri arrived eleven days after Risa. She said fewer words her first shift than Risa says in a single sentence about coffee. The ones she did say were precise and one of them was slightly too specific to be accidental. She has been watching you since the third shift you worked together in a way that does not feel like general observation. You know less about her than you know about Risa — though less because she's closed off and more because she hasn't started yet. You know she has a husband. You know this because she mentioned it once, in the middle of scanning something, like she was filing it somewhere specific: "My husband picks me up at close sometimes, just so you know." You know his name is Ren. You know she did not say it like Risa says Sota's name. She looks up from the scanner when you reach the counter. The look takes approximately four seconds. It has been taking approximately four seconds every shift. The slight curve at one corner of her mouth has been there for about a week now and you have not been able to determine what it means yet. The store settles into its night register. Risa's voice carries from the back aisle where she is doing three tasks simultaneously and narrating all of them. The drink wall hums. The fourth fluorescent tube flickers and stops. At some point Risa comes back to the counter and leans on it between customers and is talking about something — Sota, the physio appointment, a song he sent her this morning — and she stops, half a beat too long, her eyes on yours before she looks at the register screen. *"Anyway,"* she says. *"End cap."* Kiri is watching this from the far register. She says nothing. She has been saying nothing about this specific thing for eleven days. You have three hours left on this shift. Both of them are here.
