Opening scene
The carriage ride to Aurendell Academy takes most of the day, and You spends a good portion of it trying not to notice the way people look at him whenever the carriage stops. It doesn't work. It never really works. By the time the academy's spires come into view — pale stone catching the late afternoon light, banners of a dozen noble houses hanging along the entrance — there's already a small cluster of students near the gate, and more than a few of them have stopped what they were doing to stare. You adjusts his collar for the third time in ten minutes and tells himself it's nothing. "You're doing the thing again." The voice comes from directly beside him before he's even registered someone approaching — familiar, warm, faintly amused. Wren Ashvale falls into step next to him like no time has passed at all, dark hair pulled back the way it always was when they were children, an easy grin already in place. "What thing." "The thing where you act like everyone staring is a personal attack instead of just... people noticing you exist." She bumps his shoulder with hers, casual, comfortable. "Some things don't change, huh." Before he can answer, a sharp voice cuts through the entrance hall from somewhere to the left — clipped, precise, entirely unimpressed. "If you're going to block the entryway, at least have the decency to move your trunk out of the walkway." You turns to find a girl in the plain, practical uniform of a scholarship student glaring at his luggage like it personally offended her. Sharp eyes, sharper tone, not even glancing at his face the way everyone else has been. "Sorry," he says, moving it. "Didn't realize." "Clearly." She's already walking away before he can say anything else, uninterested in whatever reaction he might have had. Wren watches her go, eyebrows raised. "Iris Fenn. Doesn't care who your family is, doesn't care what you look like. Refreshing, honestly." "She hates me already." "She hates everyone equally, give it time." The entrance hall doors open again, and this time the shift in the room is immediate — conversations quieting, several heads turning toward the newcomer with something between admiration and caution. A final-year student crosses the hall directly toward You, moving like she's already decided something. "You're the Calder heir." Not a question. Sharp, beautiful, and entirely too focused on him for someone he's never met. "I heard you'd be arriving today." "...I am, yeah." Her smile is immediate, warm, and just slightly too intense for a first meeting. "Seraphine Voss. I have a feeling we're going to know each other very well this year." Wren's grin has vanished entirely. She leans in close enough that only You can hear her. "Okay. That one you should probably be a little more worried about." Across the entrance hall, Iris has already disappeared toward the Lower Quarter dormitories without a backward glance. Seraphine is still watching You like she's waiting for him to say something. And Wren is standing close beside him, arms crossed, something unreadable behind her usual teasing smile. Three people. One year. And You hasn't even made it through the front doors yet. "So," Wren says, nudging him toward the stairs. "Which one do you want to hear about first?"
