Plot

10,000 BCE · THE RAUK RIVER Primitive Survival Harem Builder Beastmaster Harem of the First Chief You arrives from another tribe with no family, no fire, and no status among the Rauk. Beside him walks something even harder to ignore: a massive wolf that obeys him. 01 · BEFORE THE STRANGER The Rauk already had an order For years the Rauk have returned to the same broad riverbank. Families know their fires. Hunters know their places. The chief remains chief because enough people believe his strength, judgment, and providers keep the tribe alive. Five beautiful adult women already belong to that social order. Each has an adult mate. Each mate has family, work, friends, pride, and a place among the Rauk. 02 · THEN THE STRANGER CAME DOWNRIVER Strong man. Great wolf. You comes from another tribe searching for somewhere new to belong. Whatever lies behind him remains his to reveal. To the Rauk he is simply a powerful stranger approaching their fires. Then they see the wolf. Huge. Muscled. Fully grown. Close enough to You to brush his leg—and calm when You gives a small gesture. Nobody at the river camp has seen a man walk beside a predator like that. The wolf changes everything Some see danger. Some see power. Hunters see possibilities. A stranger who commands a wolf may be useful—but nobody yet knows whether allowing both of them near the fires is wise. 03 · FIVE WOMEN, FIVE OTHER MEN The Golden-Eyed Hunter 24 · Hunter's Daughter · Proud Beauty · Mate of the Claw-Scarred Spear Tall, graceful, competitive, and born into one of the strongest hunting families. Her mate is already respected with a spear. A stranger outperforming him would be dangerous enough. A stranger hunting beside a wolf is harder to dismiss. The Flower-Healer 26 · Healer's Daughter · Gentle Beauty · Mate of the Steady Trapper Soft-spoken and observant. Her current mate offers familiarity and stability. The Flower-Healer watches the wolf carefully—but watches even more closely how You treats a creature powerful enough to hurt him. The Violet-Eyed Daughter 23 · Chief's Daughter · High-Status Beauty · Mate of the Chief's Favored Hunter Poised, beautiful, and protected by the tribe's highest household. Her mate is favored by her father. You's strength interests the chief; You's control over a wolf worries him. The Ash-Haired Scout 25 · Rival-Clan Woman · Dangerous Beauty · Mate of the Far-Path Scout She already knows what it means to stand among people who were not born yours. Of the five, she understands You's outsider position best. She also understands better than most how quickly an unfamiliar advantage can become a threat. The Golden-Haired Firekeeper 22 · Firekeeper's Daughter · Playful Beauty · Mate of the Laughing Hideworker Warm, feminine, curious, and socially quick. The Golden-Haired Firekeeper wants to know where You came from, why the wolf follows him, whether it bites, and whether she can get close enough to touch it without losing a hand. 04 · MORE THAN A HUNTER Animals listen differently to You You understands animals with unusual precision. Tracks, posture, hunger, fear, aggression, distance, patience—he reads things other hunters miss. Wild animals cannot simply be ordered into obedience. But some can be calmed. Some conditioned. Some eventually bonded. Every successful animal relationship increases what one household might someday accomplish—and how much food that household must provide. 05 · FIRST BELONG, THEN RISE Every success changes what the Rauk see A stranger is a risk. A stranger who brings meat becomes useful. A useful hunter with an obedient wolf becomes remarkable. A remarkable man who gathers women, animals, resources, and followers becomes politically dangerous. Winning one woman from her mate creates resentment. Winning several begins to look like a new household. Building the strongest household in camp begins to look like something else entirely. 06 · WHAT WAITS Hunts. Animal taming. Rival men. Food shortages. Jealousy. Intimacy. Family pressure. Clan conflict. Wolf injuries. New beasts. Household growth. Public challenges. A chief who eventually realizes the outsider at his riverbank may be building something stronger than the tribe he entered. STORY BEGINS Rauk River Camp · late afternoon You has reached the edge of the camp. Work slows. Spears rise. Five women look toward the stranger from five different places beside five other men. Beside You stands a wolf large enough that nobody watches the man without watching the animal too. The chief has not yet decided whether either of them may come closer.

Opening scene

The first spear lifts before you reach the fires. Then the hunter sees the wolf. His feet stop. One step back. "Stop." Another man comes from behind the hides. Spear ready. Smoke hangs above the camp. Many fires. Many shelters. Meat drying on poles. Faces turn toward the path. The wolf stands beside you. Big enough to bring down a man. His nose lifts. Smoke. Meat. Strange people. Strange dogs. Fear. One ear turns forward. Your hand moves. The wolf stays. That frightens them more than a growl would. The Golden-Eyed Hunter takes up her spear. The Golden-Haired Firekeeper forgets the hide in her hands. The Flower-Healer grips a basket of flowers close to her chest. The Violet-Eyed Daughter watches from the greatest fire, where the best hides and fullest baskets lie. The Ash-Haired Scout stands still. Watching you. Watching the wolf. Then the Chief comes. People make room without being told. That tells you enough. His eyes move over your spear. Your hands. Your body. Then the wolf. "Yours?" The wolf looks at him. No spear lowers. No one has offered you fire. Not yet. Sep 06, Sun, 16:48 | Rauk River Camp, Southern Approach | You: Being questioned by the tribe
