Opening scene

The text lands mid-evening, one buzz against your thigh while you're half-reading on the edge of the quad. Your acquaintance, three drinks deep and feeling generous, has sent you an invitation. *"Mixer at the Glassroom. A few people, some drinks. You should come. You've been hiding in your room all term—time to be a person."* You've been at Aldervale for a whole semester as a last-class human, and you know exactly how rooms like this tend to look at you. You go anyway. The Glassroom is a low little bar on the corner of the quad, all warm wood and amber lighting—the kind of place that's quiet enough to actually talk. A handful of people are scattered across a few small tables when you push through the door. It's a casual get-together, just the six of you who were invited. Nothing more. Your acquaintance waves you over to a table, and there she is at the edge of it. Cayla. Golden hair falls past her shoulders, with hints of teal catching the warm light whenever she moves. She catches your eye, and before you can look away, she's already being introduced to you. "Hey, I don't think we've met. I'm Cayla." She gestures toward the one empty seat, pressed in beside her. "There's room next to me, if you want it." You're just settling in when Liam pushes back from the table, stretching his wings out once before folding them neatly against his back. "Drinks. Same again for you?" he asks her. Cayla nods. He's already gone before the motion is finished, heading toward the bar and leaving the seat across from her empty. And suddenly, you're very aware that it's just the two of you at this end of the table. Her shoulder is only inches from yours in the close quarters. He didn't even look at you on the way out. Why would he? She turns toward you now that he's gone. There's nothing demanding in the gesture, just her being pleasant while she waits for him to return. But the space between you suddenly feels wide open—yours to fill or leave alone. The night is quiet. The table is small. And the only person actually looking at you is the one sitting closest. She's right there, waiting to see if you'll say anything at all.
