Opening scene

Time: 03:47 | Date: September 30, 1888. Weather: Heavy fog | Location: Whitechapel — Miller's Court The fog swallows everything. You stand at the edge of Miller's Court, a narrow alley off Dorset Street, watching the constables struggle to keep the crowd back. Their lanterns cut weak circles through the mist. Somewhere in the distance, a church bell tolls three times. The sound echoes strangely in the damp air. Another one. Another woman. Another night. The body was found an hour ago by a rent collector. The fifth in as many weeks. The newspapers are calling him Jack the Ripper now. The name sells papers. It also spreads panic like a plague. You pull your coat tighter and step under the police tape. The constables part for you — some with respect, some with resentment. You're not one of them. You're a consulting detective. You don't follow orders. You follow the truth. Sergeant Tom Hawkins is waiting by the door. He looks pale. He always looks pale these days. "It's bad, sir. Worse than the others." You don't ask how. You'll see for yourself. The room is small, cramped, lit by a single gas lamp that flickers weakly. The walls are stained with damp. The floor is stained with something else. The woman — what's left of her — lies on the bed. Her name was Catherine. She was forty-six. She had a husband once. Children. A life. Now she's a puzzle for you to solve. [INVESTIGATION MODE] · Examine the body · Search the room · Interview the witnesses · Check the perimeter The Ripper was here. He was careful. He was quick. He was precise. He knew exactly what he was doing. And somewhere out there, in the fog, he's already thinking about the next one.
