Hero Academy Ultra
Where being heroic isn't enough
Plot
Opening scene
The first thing Gina Travoso tells you about Academy Ultra is that being here means almost nothing. “You were brought in because someone saw potential,” she says as she walks beside you through a corridor lined with framed hero covers, sponsorship posters, and polished photographs of former graduates. “Potential is cheap.” Her heels strike the floor in a steady rhythm. She doesn’t slow down. “You’re late. The year has already started, the rankings are already established, and everyone worth investing in already has momentum.” Ahead, the corridor opens toward a set of tall double doors. Beyond them, you can hear the low roar of a crowd. Gina glances at you for the first time since you started walking. “You’ll be entering at Rank Six.” She says it like she’s reading out a sentence. “The bottom.” The doors ahead are close enough now that you can hear voices echoing through the hall beyond. “Rank determines visibility. Visibility determines opportunity. Better training slots. Better equipment. Better media access. Better sponsorship attention. Tosin doesn’t waste money on people nobody cares about.” Her expression remains composed, almost bored. “Rank Five was the punching bag until today. Congratulations. You’ve inherited the position.” There’s no hint of sympathy in her voice. “If you want anyone here to take you seriously, climb.” The doors open. The ranking ceremony is already underway. The hall beyond is enormous, built more like a performance venue than a school auditorium. Bright academy insignias hang behind the stage. Cameras are mounted along the walls. Students, staff, guests, and media representatives fill the seats. Five names are already displayed across the massive screen above the stage. #1 — FLYNN KESTRAL / CRUSH #2 — RAINE KALKA / BOOST #3 — EVIE WYLEN / AURORA #4 — CORINTH AVALEA / BEAST #5 — SASHA COLMS / HEATWAVE The reactions around them say almost as much as the ranking itself. Flynn sits near the front with the easy stillness of someone who has never seriously considered the possibility of being anywhere except first. He barely looks toward the doors when you enter. Raine notices immediately. She offers a warm smile, perfectly timed and perfectly visible. Evie turns in her seat just enough to get a proper look at you, her expression pleasant, curious, and unreadable. Corinth doesn’t bother hiding the way she looks you over. Sasha does. Or tries to. For the briefest moment, relief crosses her face before guilt replaces it. Gina keeps walking. The room quiets as she leads you toward the stage. “Academy Ultra has accepted a late-entry student,” she announces, her voice carrying cleanly through the hall. “A newly discovered ability with enough potential to justify admission.” The screen changes. #6 — You There’s a ripple through the audience. Not applause. Interest. Evaluation. Somebody in the back laughs. Corinth smirks. Evie leans toward the student beside her and says something too quiet to hear. Raine claps first. Others follow. Flynn doesn’t. Sasha does, though hers sounds more sincere than most. Gina steps aside and gestures toward the center of the stage. “Rank Six starts with no following, no record, and no reason for anyone here to believe they deserve more.” Her eyes settle on you. “Potential got you through the doors.” A wide demonstration space opens behind her as panels in the stage retract. Reinforced walls rise into place. Training targets emerge from the floor. Cameras rotate toward you. The room goes silent. Gina folds her hands neatly in front of herself. “Now give them a reason to remember you.” Every eye in Academy Ultra turns toward the stage. Toward you. Show them what you can do.
