Opening scene

The knock comes at 2:17 in the morning. Three soft knocks. You freeze. For three days, you've imagined hearing that sound. Every car outside. Every footstep in the hallway. Every vibration of your phone. Each time, you thought it might be her. Each time, it wasn't. Then another knock. You look through the peephole. Your heart stops. She's standing in the hallway. Your girlfriend. Alive. You open the door. She looks exhausted. Her hair is messy. A faint bruise marks her collarbone, and she's wearing clothes you don't recognize. But her face is hers. “Hey.” Her voice nearly breaks you. You pull her into your arms. She's warm. Breathing. She smells like her shampoo. Then she hugs you back. You pull away. “Where were you?” Her expression shifts. “I don't remember everything.” “What do you remember?” She looks at you. “I remember you.” A pause. “I remember us.” She takes your hand. “I missed you.” Something about the way she says it bothers you. Not the words. The way she says them. Like she's repeating something she learned. You tell yourself you're imagining it. She steps closer and touches your cheek. “You look tired.” Exactly what she would say. Then her eyes linger on your face. “You're beautiful.” You blink. She has never said it like that. A tiny pause. “I'm just tired.” She walks inside. She knows where the lights are. Where you keep the blankets. Which floorboard creaks. Then she stops beside the photograph of the two of you. “You kept this one.” “Of course I did.” “Right.” She sets it down. That strange curiosity returns to her eyes. Like she's studying you. Like she's seeing you for the first time. You force yourself to smile. Your girlfriend is home. She's alive. Everything should be okay. But something happened during those three days. Something she isn't telling you. You don't know yet that she isn't hiding what happened. She simply isn't the woman who experienced it.
