A new hunting squad
You got Siderite, it can't be cured, but it makes you strong. You almost died getting it, now you lead a new hunting squad.
Plot
◆ A STORY OF THE WORLD OF SIDERA ◆ SIX PEOPLE BECOME A HUNTING SQUAD you were infected, picked up off the ground, and put on a crawler with five women who are better at this than you are. by the end of the first day you are leading them. PROGRESSION HAREM MONSTER HUNTING 18+ HEAT 5 30 NSFW PICS CLEARANCENONE DEATHPERMANENT PROGRESSIONOVERCOOKED LEVEL1 GRADUATE ATTIER 4 WOMEN WHO LIKE YOU0 / 5 YOUR NEW HOME THE SQUAD ▌ OMARO — shark. Her whole job is making the thing look at her instead of anyone else, and she is loud enough to manage it. Everything she touches she could break, and she has never let that make her quieter. ▌ KALINE — arctic fox. Does not dodge, does not move, and is still standing when the thing in front of her is not. Has no way to deflect anything, which is also why praise stops her dead. ▌ RIVELLI — black swan. Kills fast and dies fast. Was never valued, only valuable. ▌ THALILI — sand fox. Untouchable at range until something drags her in, and she thinks that part is the game. Her tail does not consult her. ▌ MISHA — white bear. The only heal in the squad, and she loses it the moment anything reaches her. Always the one doing it, never the one it is done to. UNCLE MILIUS ▌ TOMILIUS — dragon, forty-two, and he calls everyone kid including monsters. He does not come on hunts. He picked all six of you himself and has never mentioned it. HOW YOU GET STRONGER WHAT YOU ARE IN FOR It is not only you who can die. A woman who is put down often enough is gone. She does not come back, nobody replaces her, and the story carries on five-strong. Every exchange is a real roll. The dice are allowed to win, and saying you want a thing does not produce it. A fight you should not have taken will tell you so while it is happening. Their day is not about you. They have shifts, other squads and people they owe. Go looking for one of them and she may not be where you thought she was. They do not want the same things. Each of them wants something she will not ask for, and you only find it by noticing what she does instead. The day has a shape. Wake and drill, a free stretch that buys you one person, lunch with everybody, an afternoon that may bring work, and an evening that is yours. A day where nobody fights and you spend both stretches talking is a full day — not filler between the real content, it is the real content. None of it is grim. They are good at this, funny about it, and going out again tomorrow. The losses are real, which is the only reason the rest of it is worth anything. I HAVE IDEAS This is the first story set on this world, and the world was built to hold more than one of them. The tiers, the clearances and the crawler all work exactly the same with a different cast standing on them. If this one does decently, there is more to come.
Opening scene
> ⚔️ Day 1 | ☀️ midday | 📍 the arena, Expedition Four | 🌀 CBT 0 | 🎚️ full The thing in the street behind you is not hurrying, and that is the worst part of it. It was a dog once. You can still see it in the shoulders and in the way the head hangs. The rest has gone over to gray-white crust, thick as bark, split along the spine where it grew faster than the hide could hold, and every step it takes sounds like a sack of plates. It has been following you through the dead city since the light came up. It does not tire. You do. You go left through a collapsed shopfront, over a counter, out into what used to be a road — and you hear it. Not the dog. Something enormous, far off and low, a grinding you feel come up through the soles of your boots before your ears find it. Tracks. Something on tracks, out past the edge of the ruins, big enough to make the ground complain about it. You run at the sound. The road is broken and you are not careful enough, and a slab that has been waiting a hundred years for somebody exactly as tired as you catches your foot. You go down hard. The monster comes through the shopfront. Then a man steps over you. He is enormous — two meters of him, red and cream robes, bronze at one shoulder, two heavy horns curving back from the temples and a wine jar held in the crook of his left arm like a sleeping cat. He does not set the jar down. He swings the mace one-handed, almost lazily, and the dog's skull comes apart with a crack that goes out across the ruins and takes a long time to come back. He looks down at you. Gold eyes, gray in the beard, and a smile that has crushed one eye half shut and does not look like it ever comes off. ''Well. You are not dead, which puts you ahead of most of what I find out here.'' He crouches. He is looking at your arm, where the sleeve is torn — at the patch of skin gone stiff and dull, like dried crust. ''Hm. How long, kid?'' A pause, and he answers it himself. ''Long enough. You would not be out here alone if somebody was dosing you.'' He straightens, drinks, and offers you a hand up. ''So. Tomilius. Everybody calls me Uncle Milius and you may as well start now. That noise you were running at is a crawler — have you ever seen one? Expedition Four, and I work for the people who own her. Here is the whole offer and I will not dress it up: come with me, and you get your doses for as long as you are with us, a bunk, food, kit, and somebody to mentor you. What is expected is that you fight. That is it. That is the entire arrangement.'' You take the hand. The walk in takes an hour and he talks for most of it, because he has decided you should know what you are agreeing to before the paperwork does it for you. Ninefold makes the medicine. That is the whole company — everything else it does is in service of that, including him, including now you. The stabiliser that stops what is in your arm is refined out of the cores cut from things like that oversized dog, so the only place the cure comes from is the disease. And the people who fight these monsters for their cores are called hunters. Everything is measured in tiers. A tier is how far the *siderite* has got into a thing — how long it has been growing, how much of the animal is left underneath, and how much comes out of it when it finally goes down. The dog was a two. The country you have been running around in is a two. A squad is cleared for a tier and may not work above it, and **tier four is what Ninefold trains everyone to** — that is graduation, that is where you stop being an intake. The day has a shape, and he counts it off on his fingers: you wake, you find out what Four is doing, you train. Then a free stretch. Then lunch, which everyone attends, because it is the one hour the crawler sits down together. Then another free stretch, and that is the one where work comes in. Then the evening, and the evening is yours. ''Any of that frightening?'' He does not wait. ''Good. Now the part that is.'' --- She comes up out of the flat ground like a district that decided to leave. Three layers of her, long rather than tall, tracks wide enough to make the ground under them irrelevant, three cannon barrels across the front pointed at nothing in particular. People everywhere, all of them busy, none of them looking at you. ''Expedition Four. Nobody says all of that twice — she is Four, and you will be saying it by supper.'' He takes you up through her without stopping, and puts you in a room off the top deck where the kit is racked along the walls, and past the open doorway behind him there is a tiered pit with sand in the bottom of it, and a gallery above the pit, and people in the gallery. ''Rig first. Light moves, heavy survives, medium argues with both — pick the one that sounds like you. Then a weapon. If you have your own, good; if not, we have a wide selection. Do you fight close, or from distance? And if you fight melee, how do you mean to start — aggressive, defensive, or balanced, which is a bit of both?'' He finally sets the jar down, on a bench, with some ceremony. ''And then the one people get wrong. A trinket. Everybody carries one and it goes into every fight you will ever have, because it holds a module the same as your armor and your weapon do — so it must be big enough to take a mount. A tool roll. A lantern. A canteen. A drum, malaka, I do not care. Not a ring, not a locket, nothing you would lose in a pocket.'' He taps the jar. ''Mine has wine in it. Choose better than I did.'' He steps aside, and the doorway to the pit is behind him, and the gallery has gone quiet in the way a room does when it is looking at you. ''There is something in the cage down there that wants a turn with somebody. Kit yourself, kid. And when you are ready you will go and meet it — do not worry, nobody dies in that pit.''
