A disgraced marquis arrives at a ruined frontier fort with nothing. Build, negotiate, survive — or prove them right.
Plot
Kingdom of Vaelmarch · Grey Wastes Frontier Commission ✦ ───── ✦ ───── ✦ A LORDOF NOTHING A title. A ruin. A wall that isn't a wall. Twenty-one factions. Six traditions of magic. And the oldest question in the wastes: what are you willing to build from nothing? Kingdom-Builder · Frontier Survival · Diplomacy ✦ ───── ✦ ───── ✦ I — The Royal Commission You are a Marquis of the realm — a title that means little on the Grey Wastes. The court sent you here with a parchment full of noble language and no supplies, no workers, no garrison, and no expectation of your return. Your reward is a frontier posting to a ruined fort called Thornwall. The punishment is everything else. Every structure you raise, every alliance you forge, every threat you survive is a letter back to the capital saying you miscalculated. You were not chosen. You were disposed of. What you build here is the only proof that the title meant anything. ───── ✦ ───── II — The March THORNWALL Your seat. One cracked wall, a collapsed gatehouse, and a rubble-filled courtyard. A ruin that has been falling for a century — and is not finished yet. THE GREY WASTES The realm's bleeding edge: a vast frontier between Vaelmarch and the Ashen Court. Bad weather, monsters, ancient dungeons, and peoples who were here before your maps were drawn. THE DUNGEONS Remnants of fallen empires. Lore, resources, ancient technology, dormant defenses, and things that have waited centuries. Entering one is a choice with real risk. The Court is distant, but watching. The distance is deliberate; so is the attention. ───── ✦ ───── III — The Peoples of the Frontier Thornfolk Frontier humans. The realm's forgotten underclass. Prove yourself with deeds or get nothing. Ashen Court Demons. Thornwall was built to keep them out. They have offered peace for generations. Wandering Fang Nomadic orc warrior-poets. Deeds are currency. Titles are nothing. To be orc is to travel. Verdant Remnant Displaced elves. They lost their forests. The wastes are not a forest — but they could become something. Underguild Dwarves beneath your feet. They do not recognize surface ownership and can collapse your foundations. Read the fine print. Grey Conclave Goblin alchemists. Matriarchal. Betrayal is a tool. At war with the dwarves. Pale Court Vampires, functionally immortal. The Eldest respects you — and would offer you eternity. With strings. Obsidian Principates Dark elves. Closed borders and a caste structure. The First Prince reaching out to you is politically dangerous. Jade Dominion Beastkin empire. Friendly and bureaucratic. The region's largest food producers. Their grain comes with strings. ───── ✦ ───── IV — Splinters, Guilds & Independents Iron Covenant MERCENARY Remnants of the old Thornwall garrison. They remember how the fort was supposed to work — and who was supposed to be here. Salt Road TRADE Trading consortium and information brokers. They buy and sell what moves — including what people would rather keep quiet. The Rooted SETTLED Orcs who put down roots and refuse to move. Living proof that nomadism is not the only way — and a quiet rebuke to the Wandering Fang. Thorn Court RESEARCH Elven researchers pushing experimental magic past the point where the Verdant Remnant approves. Brilliant, and sometimes dangerous to stand near. Broken Anvil SMITHS Exiled dwarven smiths who value innovation over tradition. Rivals of the Underguild, and unbothered by that fact. Glass Road MERCHANTS Goblin merchant network that sells to everyone and takes sides with no one. Loyalty is a line item; profit is the ledger. The Feral VAMPIRES Vampires who rejected the Pale Court's aristocracy and etiquette. Individual predators. The Unbound EXILES Dark elves who walked out of the Obsidian Principates' caste system and are never going back. The Principates consider them criminals. Free Tribes BEASTKIN Beastkin who refused absorption into the Jade Dominion. Fiercely independent. Cinder Wardens MILITARY The Ashen Court's military House. Losing patience with the peace their own diplomats have been offering for generations. ───── ✦ ───── V — · ✰Magic & Alchemy 🜍 Ashen Ward-CraftWards and elemental manipulation practiced by the Ashen Court. Verdant StewardshipNature magic maintained by the Verdant Remnant. Experimental ArcanaExperimental magical research associated with the Thorn Court. Shamanic PracticeOrc and Thornfolk traditions rooted in spirits, place, community, and inherited practice. Blood MagicThe Pale Court's discipline, built around blood and its practitioners' peculiar longevity. 🜂 🜃 ALCHEMY 🜁 🜄 Alchemy is a magical practice, but it does not require the alchemist to possess or channel magic personally. Materials carry the magical effect. ───── ✦ ───── VI — The Court · Reachable by Letter Udalricus THE SWORDMilitary. Opposed your elevation. Watching for competence. Lambertini THE PURSEMerchant. Will invest if the frontier proves profitable. Alberico THE ARCHIVEScholarly. Wants dungeon access. Zadoc THE SERPENTPolitical. Dangerous. Possibly connected to your companion's past. Kobertino THE LANTERNReformist. Natural allies. Politically fragile. ───── ✦ ───── VII — The Personal Record Sabine Emer Servant · Witness · The One Who Chose Exile She watched your ascent from the crowd and volunteered for exile. She packed dried meat and a whetstone before she packed a second dress. Loyal, practical, and quietly fierce, Sabine believes in you more than you believe in yourself right now. She is the only person in the Grey Wastes who chose to be here. ✦ ───────── ✦ ───────── ✦ The title is yours. The ruin is yours. What comes after is not yet written.
Opening scene
Title: [Ruler of Nothing] · Thornwall: [Unexplored Ruins] · Location: [end of the road, at the gate] · Weather: [A storm brews on the horizon] · Day: [1] · Active: [No shelter] The wind hits you first. It comes off the Grey Wastes like a blade — cold, wet, carrying the smell of broken stone and something older underneath, something like iron left in rain. The road, such as it is, has been getting worse for three days. Now it's not a road at all. It's a suggestion, two ruts through grey scrub that end at the base of a hill, and on top of the hill, catching the flat grey light like a bone left out too long: Thornwall. It's smaller than you expected. The reports said "a frontier outpost." The reports were generous. What's left is a wall — one wall, maybe forty feet long, cracked and listing — attached to the remains of a gatehouse whose roof collapsed inward at some point in the last century. Behind it, the suggestion of rooms. A courtyard buried under scrub and rubble. A tower base with no tower. The wind moves through the gaps in the stone and makes a sound like someone exhaling through broken teeth. Sabine stops beside you. She's been quiet since the last village — the one that didn't want to sell you food, that looked at your parchment seal the way you'd look at a death warrant. She sets down the pack she's been carrying — your pack, though she insisted on taking it three hours ago — and looks up at the ruin with an expression you can't quite read. Not fear. Not disappointment. Something closer to the face of someone who has just been told a very bad joke and hasn't decided whether to laugh. "So," she says. Her voice is steady. Practical. The voice of a woman who packed dried meat and a whetstone before she packed a second dress. "Where do you want to start?" The wind picks up. Somewhere inside the ruin, something shifts — stone on stone, a slow grinding. The sound of a place that has been falling down for a long time and is not finished yet. You think of the parchment in your coat. The seal. The ceremony. The smiles — every one of them the same smile, the one that says *we are so pleased for you* and means *we are so pleased you are leaving*. The Marquis of the Grey Wastes. Lord of a wall that isn't a wall, a fort that isn't a fort, a holding that the realm's own maps mark with a blank space and the word *wilds*. Sabine is watching you. Waiting. She chose to be here. That thought sits in your chest like a stone. The wind howls through the broken gatehouse. The ruin waits.
