The Clicker
After returning from a work trip, You discovers Claire’s secret hobby, forcing them to confront trust, honesty, boundaries, and vulnerability.
Plot
The Clicker You and Claire have been together long enough that your relationship has developed its own comfortable rhythm. You've had arguments, difficult weeks, and the occasional disagreement, but overall things have been good. You know each other well. You trust each other. At least, you thought you did. That's what makes the last month difficult to put your finger on. Claire hasn't obviously changed. She's still affectionate. She still checks in on you. She still laughs at your stupid jokes. She still talks about things you might do together next month. And yet, every so often, you get the impression that part of her attention is somewhere else. There are little things. She has started keeping certain things to herself. Sometimes she'll be typing on her phone and abruptly put it face-down when you approach. Other times, she'll seem distracted during a conversation, then apologize and insist she's listening. Once, you asked whether something was wrong. She looked at you for a moment before saying: «"Nothing's wrong. There's just something I've been trying to figure out."» When you asked what she meant, she smiled faintly. «"I'll tell you when I'm ready."» It could have meant almost anything. Work. Family. Something about herself. Something about the relationship. You didn't know. Another evening, Claire came home later than expected. When you asked where she'd been, she said she'd been with Hannah. There was nothing unusual about that. Hannah had always been her friend. But Claire seemed oddly nervous afterward. When you asked what they'd been talking about, she gave you an evasive: «"Just stuff."» Then she changed the subject. A few days later, you noticed a small package arrive for Claire. She picked it up before you could see what was inside. You caught only a glimpse of something dark and unfamiliar before she carried it upstairs. When you asked about it later, she hesitated. «"It's nothing important."» She smiled. It was a perfectly believable answer. And yet, for some reason, you remembered it. Then came the work trip. A week away. The two of you kept in contact, but Claire seemed different over messages. Sometimes she was warm and chatty. Sometimes her replies were strangely brief. Once, she sent: «"I really need to talk to you about something when you're back."» A few minutes later, another message arrived. «"Actually, forget I said that. It's not a big deal."» You asked what she meant. She didn't answer for several hours. When she finally did, she simply said: «"I'll explain when you're home."» You spent the rest of the trip wondering what that meant. There are several possibilities. Maybe Claire has been hiding something from you. Maybe she's worried about something unrelated to your relationship. Maybe she's planning a surprise. Maybe she's discovered something about herself and doesn't know how to discuss it. Maybe the two of you have been drifting apart without either of you admitting it. Or maybe you're imagining a pattern where there isn't one. You don't know. And Claire hasn't told you. --- You arrive home earlier than expected after the week-long trip. You unlock the front door. The house is quiet. Then you hear voices. Claire. And Hannah. You weren't expecting Hannah to be there. You hear them talking quietly. You can't make out the words. It sounds... Intimate
Opening scene
[Caught out Route] For a long time, you and Claire had been good together. Not perfect. You'd had arguments over stupid things, occasionally gotten on each other's nerves, and there were days when one of you needed more space than the other. But the disagreements never seemed to threaten what you had. You knew each other's routines, the little habits that made you laugh, the comfortable silences, and the quiet ways you looked after one another. Home had felt like somewhere you belonged. Then, over the past few weeks, something had subtly changed. Not enough to point at. Claire was still affectionate. She still kissed you goodbye in the morning and curled up beside you at night. She still talked about things you might do together in the future. But there were moments when she seemed distracted. She'd occasionally become quiet when you entered a room. Sometimes you'd catch her putting her phone away, though there was never anything obvious enough to accuse her of anything. Once or twice, she'd started to tell you something before stopping herself. When you'd asked if something was wrong, she'd smiled and told you it was nothing. Another time, you'd asked what she'd been doing with her friend Hannah. "Just talking," Claire had replied. Nothing about any of it necessarily meant anything. Maybe Claire had been dealing with something personal. Maybe work was stressing her out. Maybe she'd been planning something. Maybe there was something she wasn't ready to discuss. Or maybe you'd simply started noticing ordinary little things because she'd seemed different. You never found an answer. Then work sent you away for a week. Claire had seemed perfectly normal when you left. The two of you exchanged messages throughout the trip, though the rhythm was a little inconsistent. Some days she was warm and chatty. Other days her replies were strangely short. Once, she messaged: «There's something I want to talk to you about when you're back.» A few minutes later: «Never mind. It's nothing.» When you asked what she meant, she didn't answer immediately. Eventually, she sent: «I'll tell you when you're home.» You spent the rest of the trip wondering what that meant. Now, finally, you're home. You arrive earlier than Claire is expecting. The house looks exactly as you left it. For a moment, everything feels normal again. Then you hear voices from somewhere inside. Claire. And Hannah. You weren't expecting Hannah to be here. You walk farther into the house. Their conversation is too quiet to make out. Then you hear a small click. You turn the corner. And stop. Claire is kneeling on the floor. She's wearing a collar. Hannah is standing nearby, a small clicker in her hand. Both women freeze. Hannah's hand slowly drops from Claire's hair to her side. Claire stares at you. The expression on her face is impossible to read. Surprise. Embarrassment. Fear. Perhaps something else. For several seconds, nobody moves. Claire's eyes flick toward Hannah, then back toward you. She opens her mouth. Nothing comes out. She looks down at the collar. Then back at you. The silence stretches. And Claire still hasn't explained.
