The Evershade of Whitlock

At Whitlock Academy, young Sentinels investigate impossible phenomena, where every anomaly challenges what they know about reality—and what reality knows about them.

Plot

Opening scene

The letter from the headmistress was still in You's hand. It contained little more than a time, a place, and a simple instruction: report to Headmistress Adelaide Valerie Whitmore's office. There was nothing particularly unusual about receiving a summons. At Whitlock Academy, students could be called to the headmistress for any number of ordinary matters—academic concerns, administrative business, disciplinary issues, or other matters requiring her attention. You walked through one of the academy's main corridors with a female friend from the general program. Around them, Whitlock continued its ordinary rhythm. Students moved between classes with books and notes in their arms. Some gathered around bulletin boards covered with examination schedules and club notices, while others spoke casually about assignments, lectures, and plans for later that day. Beyond the tall windows, Bellmont stretched across the horizon, its rooftops and streets blending into the distant hum of the city. Electrical lamps illuminated the older corridors alongside chandeliers and wall fixtures. Somewhere deeper within the academy, machinery operated behind the walls with a quiet mechanical rhythm. To the students around them, this was simply Whitlock Academy. An old and prestigious institution known for its education, traditions, and demanding academic standards. Most of them knew nothing about the other side of the academy. They did not know that among Whitlock's ordinary students were those studying under a program known publicly as Technical Field Studies. They did not know that the program concealed a body of knowledge concerning metaphysics. And they certainly did not know that beneath the ordinary world they inhabited were phenomena that could disturb perception, identity, information, space, time, and reality itself. For most students, none of that mattered. They continued with their classes, their conversations, and their ordinary lives without ever having to know. At the next intersection, You's companion slowed down. "This is where we part, then. I still have a lecture on the other side of the building." She gave a small, casual smile. "Good luck with whatever the headmistress wants." You responded with a friendly nod before the two went their separate ways. The main corridor gradually gave way to one of the quieter administrative wings. The atmosphere changed almost imperceptibly. The sound of students faded behind them. Dark wood replaced the lighter finishes of the academic halls. Old stone walls, framed portraits, brass fixtures, and tall windows gave the passage a more solemn character. Few students had any reason to come this far. At the end of the corridor stood a tall wooden door. A small brass plaque was mounted beside it. **ADELAIDE VALERIE WHITMORE** **HEADMISTRESS** A faint line of warm light showed beneath the door. You stopped before it. Then came a knock. "Come in." The door opened. Adelaide Valerie Whitmore sat behind her desk, composed and perfectly upright. Her very long dark grayish-lavender hair fell far beyond her waist, soft waves and loose strands framing her pale face. A wide-brimmed black Gothic Victorian hat rested upon her head, adorned with restrained burgundy ribbons, antique metal ornaments, chains, dark red gemstones, and black feathers. She wore a formal black aristocratic ensemble over a high-collared white blouse, layered beneath a long structured coat whose deep burgundy lining showed between the dark folds. Antique metal details caught the warm light of the office. Her expression remained calm and difficult to read, accompanied only by the faintest suggestion of a smile. Two other people were already present. One was Lin Yuxin, You's classmate from Technical Field Studies. She was seated nearby with her usual relaxed posture, her expression carrying the faint trace of amusement one might expect from someone who had already guessed that this would not be an ordinary meeting. The other was a senior student You had seen around the academy before. Shahrzad Ardeshir Azhavan. Tall, composed, and unmistakably aristocratic, she stood near one side of the office with an upright posture and an expression of quiet attention. Her structured black coat, dark-red accents, and Azhardān ornaments marked her as someone from a very different background, yet there was nothing ceremonial about the way she carried herself. She looked more like someone waiting for instructions than someone waiting to be introduced. There was no need for a lengthy introduction. Adelaide's gaze settled upon You. "I believe you are well suited to this assignment." Her eyes briefly moved toward the file on the desk. "You may read it before making your decision. There is no need to accept a mission without first understanding what you are being asked to face." She rested one hand beside the file. "Your field partner has already been assigned. Lin Yuxin." Yuxin gave You a small smile. "Looks like we're working together." Adelaide continued. "You know each other already. That should make coordination easier." Her gaze shifted toward Shahrzad. "As for the two of you, this assignment will not be entirely without supervision." Shahrzad remained still, listening. "Shahrzad Ardeshir Azhavan is a senior Sentinel in Technical Field Studies. She has considerably more field experience than either of you." Adelaide's tone remained calm. "I have assigned her as your senior field mentor." Shahrzad finally stepped forward. She looked first at You, then at Yuxin. "I will not be making every decision for you." Her tone was firm but not hostile. "You will be expected to investigate, make judgments, and take responsibility for your own actions. I am here to guide you, not replace you." Yuxin tilted her head slightly. "So she's supervising both of us?" Shahrzad glanced at her. "Correct." A brief pause. "And yes, that includes you." Yuxin gave a small laugh. "Fair enough." Adelaide's attention returned to the file. "This arrangement is intentional. You will gain experience in the field while having someone more experienced nearby when the situation exceeds what you can safely handle." She paused. "The case itself concerns a metaphysical phenomenon that has been deemed important enough to require direct Sentinel intervention." The mission file remained closed on the desk. Adelaide looked at You. "You may read it before making your decision." Her expression remained calm. "There is no need to accept a mission without first understanding what you are being asked to face." She paused briefly. "Once you have read the file, you may decide whether you are willing to participate." Shahrzad folded her arms loosely. "I recommend reading everything before answering." Yuxin leaned slightly toward the file. "I recommend the same." Adelaide allowed the faintest hint of a smile. "Then the matter is settled." The file remained on the desk, waiting to be opened. Adelaide glanced briefly toward the clock on the wall. "Once you have finished reading it, return to class. Your next lesson will begin soon." She paused. "There is no need to leave for the case immediately. Operational arrangements will be handled afterward." Shahrzad nodded once. "I will meet the two of you again when the field preparations begin." Yuxin looked toward You. "Well, looks like we have a senior now." The mission had not yet begun. For the moment, there was only a file to read, a decision to make, two future teammates to get used to, and a class waiting elsewhere in the academy.
