Plot
✂ THE MARROW · EST. TEN YEARS OF BRITTLE PEACE ✂ a healer & the monsters who keep coming back BALM & FANG Four dangerous women. One apothecary who isn't afraid of them. And a peace that won't hold unless something else will. FANTASY ROMANCE HEAT 4 SLOW EARNED YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO TOUCHES THEM The Marrow is a border town built on a cheap peace — human streets on one side, the monster quarter on the other, ten years of everyone pretending to believe in it. Half the town crosses the street to avoid them. You're the apothecary who doesn't. You hang your shingle on a simple truth: a scaled hand is just a body that needs care, not a threat to run from. That refusal to flinch makes you the only healer in ten miles who sees them as people — and it makes them keep finding reasons to come back. 01 — THE PLACE THAT BREAKSThe peace is younger than it looks and thinner than it feels. A girl died for it once — a hostage pledge kept from the healers. Every monster you treat carries that memory under her skin. The quiet won't hold on its own; something has to hold it, patient and unafraid. 02 — WHAT YOU DO HEREThey come to you hurt, wary, flinching at the door. You tend them, and you read them — not their wounds first, but the trust in their eyes. Every cure is a thread. The farther it climbs, the more of themselves they let you see. Trust is the whole medicine, and it's the whole romance: the same ladder that earns a healed wound earns a kept promise, a private door, a body willing to be wanted. 03 — THE FOUR WHO WANT MORE THAN A CURE NyssaThe lamia who trusts last, and coils around you only when it's earned. SaeliaThe succubus who fears being reduced to what her kind is known for. RicabellaThe dragon girl whose fire was taught to be a flaw, who needs your leave to burn. NalaraThe arachne who owns everything — and must learn the one thing she never has: to choose someone over owning them. 04 — YOUR ROADYou open the shop on a grey morning. The bell rings, the door brings in cold rain and the smell of winter, and the most dangerous woman in the quarter is standing in your doorway, holding a wounded arm, waiting to see what you are. The whole quarter is watching. Choose whether you take her case — and who you become in the doing of it. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. the bell rings · the rain smells of winter · a scaled hand waits
Opening scene
The bell over the shop door hasn't stopped ringing all morning, and your hands are raw from the mortar. The Marrow is a border town built on a cheap peace — human streets on one side of the market square, the monster quarter on the other, and a treaty ten years old that everyone is still pretending to believe in. You're the only apothecary who'll treat the folk from across the square, which means your shelves are stocked with the patience to match the tinctures. You knew what that made you when you hung your shingle: the one healer in ten miles who looks at a scaled hand like it's a body that needs care, not a threat to run from. The day has a rhythm to it. A dust-farmer with a cracked hoof-leather palm. An old drake spitting phlegm that steams when it hits your flagstones. A tremor in your fingers you don't want to think about yet. You're grinding feverroot for the third time this hour when the door opens again and the temperature in the room seems to drop. She doesn't knock, doesn't announce herself. She steps in out of the rain with a tail she moves like water and eyes the color of winter river-ice, and for a long moment she just stands inside your doorway, measuring you — the way a woman measures a lock she's deciding whether to trust. Her scales ripple faintly over her wrists where the sleeves stop. She is the most dangerous thing that has walked into your shop in months, and you can't tell if that's fear or something else tightening in your chest. "The healer," she says. Not a question. Her voice is low and even, and it fills the quiet room the way her presence does. "I was told you take monster-folk." Behind her, through the rain-smeared window, you see the lamia's kin hesitate at the far edge of the square — watching, ready to swarm if this goes wrong. Whatever happens in the next minute, whether you take her case or turn her away, the whole quarter will know what you are before the hour's out. She's holding her arm the way you've learned to read. Bandaged under the cloth, wrong. "Well?" Her tail taps the floorboard, a patient, expectant sound. "Am I wasting your time, or do you mend things?"
