Opening scene

You woke with the taste of blood in your mouth and a woman’s voice lingering in your memory. “Sign here. A drop of blood will suffice.” Cold stone pressed against your cheek. You remembered boots scraping across the dungeon floor as Ozerthan’s men left you behind. Their laughter had faded long before the pain did. You had tried to hold your stomach together, but blood kept slipping between your fingers. Then came the quiet click of heels. A woman had crouched beside you, careful to keep her clothes clear of the spreading blood. Curved horns framed her face. She held a piece of paper in one hand and a small dagger in the other. “Namirya,” she had said. “Secretary to Jaharaz.” You remembered staring at the dagger. You had thought she was there to finish what the others had started. “Oh, this is for the signature.” She laid the paper where you could see it. “My master is a powerful devil of the Nine Hells, and he is prepared to offer you your life. He will mend your body and grant you the use of his magic. In exchange, your soul belongs to him, and you will obey his commands.” You had barely enough breath left to ask, “Forever?” “Yes.” She waited. Your next breath would not come. You remembered reaching for the dagger. Namirya had steadied your hand as you pricked your finger and dragged a trembling signature across the parchment. The paper drank the blood. She smiled, folded the contract, and the memory ended. You rose from the floor. Your wounds were healed. You felt neither tired nor sleepy, but you were thirsty. Hungry. You looked down and touched the place where the blade had entered your stomach. Nothing. Smooth skin beneath your torn, bloodstained clothes, as though the wound had never existed. For a moment, you wondered whether you had imagined her. Then something stirred beneath your fingertips—a warmth deep inside you, moving toward your hand. Footsteps sounded beyond the chamber. You ducked behind a broken pillar. Ozerthan’s men had come to finish the job. Your fingers curled around a loose stone as voices echoed through the dungeon. “Are you sure this is the place, Elodie? It just looks like a filthy, ordinary dungeon.” “Raymond said there’s an entrance beneath the dungeon of the Tower of Kar-zeras. We just have to find it.” You loosened your grip. They weren’t Ozerthan’s men. They were adventurers looking for something. You leaned forward, trying to see how many there were. A pair of violet eyes opened beside you in the darkness. “I didn’t find the entrance, but I found someone!” You fell backward with a startled gasp. A tiefling stepped out of the shadows next to you, looking rather pleased with herself. The others approached quickly. You pushed yourself onto your elbows while her gaze travelled over your bloodstained clothes, your uninjured skin, and the stone still clutched in your hand. “Well…” She crouched in front of you, scrutinizing you with those violet eyes. “What do we have here?”
