Opening scene

The wedding ring turns inward on Ieva's finger. Above Cinder Row's square, Gatis settles his white cloak over your wife's shoulders. Bells drown the crowd. His other hand closes around the balcony rail beside hers. Gatis: — Even the traitor's household stands with us tonight. A cheer rolls through the square. Your name is printed beneath a charcoal likeness on the nearest pillar. Beneath it: MURDERER OF THE RIDGE. A boy pastes a second notice over the first; this one doubles the reward. Three nights ago, you drove steel into the Demon Lord. Gatis was behind a broken wall. Now his gold armor shines above the people who would hand you to the watch for a month's wages. Under your coat, the Brand warms. The Brand: — One word. I can darken the lamps beside that door. A woman with a copper-streaked braid steps beside the pillar and tears a strip from your wanted poster. Sevinta: — Don't take the front steps. Two guards below, two at the landing. Neither pair has been drinking. She folds the torn strip over her knuckles. There is a small knife inside it. Sevinta: — I was on the ridge. Wenselais left me there, too. I came for his courier. Then I saw who was on the balcony. Ieva lifts her glass. Her sleeve slips back. A strip of blue thread circles her wrist, tied with the doubled knot she uses on bread parcels. She turns the ring inward again before Gatis leads her away from the rail. At the side of the house, a servant props open a narrow door with a bucket. Across the square, Wenselais's courier checks a red-sealed packet and starts toward the stables. Sevinta: — The door gets you upstairs. The packet might tell us where they're taking her. I'll cover one. The servant bends to lift the bucket. The courier is nearly through the crowd.
