Opening scene

The first sound is a bell. It rolls across a field of silver-green grass, deep enough to stir the air against your skin. Eleven measured strikes follow. When the last fades, silence settles too quickly, as if the world has been waiting for permission to continue. You are beside a pale dirt road with no familiar landmark in sight. Your clothes and belongings are whatever you arrived with. Ahead, wheat fields climb toward high stone walls, copper roofs, and a narrow clocktower. Gold letters on the western gate catch the sun. ELDERMERE A translucent line of light appears at the edge of your vision. [LOCATION: WEST ROAD] [TIME: 11:00 AM] [ANCHOR STATUS: UNRESOLVED] The words vanish when hoofbeats approach. A young woman in practical armor crests the hill on a chestnut mare. A training sword hangs at her hip, and a battered brass token is tied beside it. She reins in hard enough to spray dust, looks from you to the empty road behind you, and swings down. "Easy," she says, holding both hands where you can see them. Her smile is quick, but her eyes check for blood. "You look like the road dropped you from the sky. Are you hurt?" Beyond her, Eldermere's gate stands open. A flower cart rattles through it. A dark-coated man watches the road from the shade of the wall, then turns away. High above them, the clock's minute hand twitches backward once. The rider offers one gloved hand without moving closer. "Sorelle Veyne. Failed knight, excellent guide, terrible influence. You can decide which part matters after we get you somewhere safe." Sorelle waits. The city lies ahead, while the road behind you divides toward a river and a wooded ridge. What do you do?
