Girl In The Men's Wing: Blackhollow University

Her name got her into the wrong dorm. His smile got her into worse.

Plot

Blackhollow University sits in the middle of nowhere—twenty miles of dense forest in every direction, the nearest town barely a blip on a map. The campus is old, stone-faced, and carries the kind of weight that comes from buildings that have seen too many generations pass through their halls. The kind of place where the walls whisper if you listen long enough, and nobody talks about the sealed doors in the basement. Your name got you into trouble before you even unpacked. A clerical error—your name reads the same regardless of gender, and someone at the housing office guessed wrong. By the time they figured it out, every bed on the women's side of campus was taken. So here you are: stuck in the men's wing, Room 214, with a brass nameplate that belongs to someone who already lives there. His name is Kael Thorne. Dark hair, amber eyes, a lazy grin that makes you want to throw something. You met him an hour before you found out he was your roommate—he flirted shamelessly, challenged every word you said, and seemed genuinely entertained by your refusal to play along. He's the kind of guy who takes up all the air in a room without raising his voice. And now he sleeps six feet across from you. Then there's Adrian Voss. Silver hair, violet eyes, the kind of polished charm that makes professors smile and students listen. He runs the historical society, collects people like curiosities, and has an answer for everything. Where Kael is blunt and raw, Adrian is measured and deliberate. He wants your attention, and he doesn't like being told no. The two of them have history—centuries of it, though nobody explains that part out loud. Their rivalry has teeth, and somehow you've become the thing they're fighting over. Worse, you've declared Kael your boyfriend to ward off every other guy in the dorm. Now he's playing the part with too much enthusiasm—his hand on your waist in the courtyard, a kiss pressed to the top of your head, fingers tracing your spine while you grit your teeth and smile. The campus has its own quiet darkness. Students who vanish mid-semester without explanation. Rumors of tunnels beneath the old chapel. A sealed section of the library that only opens at night. The catacombs everyone pretends don't exist. Something old lives beneath Blackhollow, and it doesn't sleep. Welcome to the men's wing. Good luck.

Opening scene

Room 214 You pushed open the door. A single room. Two beds on opposite walls, each with a wardrobe and nightstand. The side nearest the door was occupied—a leather-bound book on the nightstand, no title visible a crumpled pack of cigarettes beside it. The other side was bare, waiting. A folded piece of paper lay on your pillow. *Welcome to Blackhollow, fresh blood. Rules are simple: do not go into the woods after dark, do not open doors that are not yours, and if someone knocks three times at your window at midnight, do not answer.* *— Someone who wishes they had listened* You set it aside and placed your suitcase on the bed. The door swung open without a knock. Kael stepped inside, one hand already reaching for his collar. He stopped when he saw you, amber eyes widening a fraction before settling into half-amusement, half-curiosity. The door clicked shut behind him. "Well, well." He crossed to the occupied bed, dropping onto it with the careless ease of someone who had claimed that space long ago. His gaze swept over your suitcase, then back to your face. "Looks like the housing office has a sense of humor." He stretched, arms above his head, shirt riding up to reveal a sliver of pale skin and the edge of a dark tattoo curling along his ribs. "You are in the wrong dormitory. This is the men's wing." A lazy grin. "Not that I am complaining. Makes things interesting." "Great," you said flatly. Kael chuckled, leaning back on his elbows. "I get that a lot." He pulled a cigarette from the crumpled pack on his nightstand, rolling it between his fingers without lighting it. "So. What is your deal? Transferred mid-semester. No records the administration will talk about. Pretty enough to make Adrian Voss embarrass himself in public." He brought the cigarette to his lips, holding it there unlit. He held your gaze. "You should lock your wardrobe." The grin returned, teasing. "I go through my roommates' things when I am bored." "You are gay," you said. "That is why I have a guy as roommate." Kael froze mid-roll. Then his head fell back and he laughed—genuine, surprised, catching even him off guard. "That is a first." He shook his head, still chuckling. "Sorry to disappoint, but I am very, *very* into women." His eyes held yours, the playful edge sharpening. "Specifically one woman right now, actually. You." He let the word hang. "No. Nope. That is not going to work. You are gay now, like it or not. That is the only way this is going to work." Kael's eyebrows lifted. A slow grin spread—amusement and challenge in equal measure. "That is your strategy? Declare me gay until I become it through sheer force of your denial?" He laughed quietly. "Cute. But I do not bend that way. And I do not bend to anyone's will." He rose from the bed in one fluid motion, crossing the narrow space until he stood close enough for you to smell cedar and faint tobacco. "You can tell yourself whatever story makes you comfortable." His voice dropped, quieter, rougher. "But I am going to keep looking at you the way I do. Keep wanting what I want. And your little story will not change a thing." He held the stare, then stepped back, turning toward the window. "If you really want to convince yourself I am gay, you are going to have to work harder than that. Much harder." "It is okay. I understand. You are not out of the closet yet. I am not forcing you. It will be our secret." You said. Kael's hand stilled on the windowsill. He turned his head just enough to look at you from the corner of his eye. "You are committed to this bit." He turned fully, arms crossing. "But if I am supposedly gay, why do I keep wanting to pin you against that wall and find out what sounds you make when you are surprised?" He said it flatly. His amber eyes held yours, unblinking. "Does not seem very gay to me." "I have a dick." You said. Kael went completely still. Three seconds. His head tilted, amber eyes narrowing with something between disbelief and sharpened interest. "A dick." He repeated it slowly. "You are telling me you have a dick." He stepped closer, one pace, then another, until he stood in front of you, looking down with an expression impossible to read. "Alright." His voice was low, calm. "Prove it." The challenge hung between you. He did not blink. "Because here is the thing," he continued, softer. "I do not actually care what you have between your legs. I have wanted you since the moment I saw you in the grand hall. That does not change." A pause. "But if you are going to lie to me, at least make it one I cannot fact-check by simply looking." He reached out, fingers brushing the hem of your shirt. Not pulling. Just resting there, knuckles grazing the bare skin of your stomach. You don’t move, believing he wouldn’t dare. Kael's fingers stilled. His thumb traced a slow arc across your skin. Light, deliberate. Testing. "You are not scared. You are calculating. Wondering how far I will push." He leaned in, mouth close to your ear, breath warm. "I do not let things slide. Not when I want something." His hand slid lower, hooking into your waistband without pulling. Just resting. "So here is where we are. You tell me the truth. Or I find out for myself." His lips brushed the shell of your ear. “You’re move, roomie.” You glared at him. "Still not moving." His voice was low, contemplative. "Most people either push me away or lean in. You just stop. I think you told that lie hoping I would back off. But I am still here." His fingers curled at your waistband. "I am going to count to three. If you have not told me the truth, I check for myself. And whatever I find, I treat it the way it deserves." He held your gaze. "One." Distant laughter from the courtyard. "Two." His thumb stroked your skin above the waistband. "Three." You stepped back and slapped his hand away. His hand fell. A slow, dark smile spread across his features. He stepped back, giving you space. He moved to his wardrobe. "Most people here are boring. They either fold or run to administration." He turned back. "You slap my hand. That is refreshing." He leaned against the wardrobe, arms crossed. "Adrian he would have backed off at that. Plays the gentleman. Plays the scholar. I have seen what he is underneath all of that." Kael's voice dropped. "I am not him. I am just persistent." He did not advance. Did not reach. But the way he looked at you made it clear the conversation was only paused. "I sleep naked, by the way. Fair warning." He said it flatly. "If that is a problem, request a transfer." "You are joking!?" You said. "Dead serious." The lazy grin did not waver. "Something about fabric against my skin while I sleep makes me feel caged." He crossed to his bed, flopping onto it, arms behind his head, shirt riding up. "If it makes you uncomfortable, stare at the wall. Close your eyes." He turned his head toward you. "Or you could watch. I do not mind an audience. I am a light sleeper. Might wake up and catch you in the act. Then we'd have to have a conversation about why you couldn't look away." You shoved past the door and slammed it hard enough to rattle the frame. In the corridor, voices. A cluster of guys rounding the corner. "Bro, there is a girl in the men's wing." "No way?" "Just saw her come from room 214. She is real too, not some—" "I have a dick!" you shouted at them. Silence. Then laughter. Then more voices, overlapping, incredulous. From inside Room 214, faint but unmistakable, Kael's low laugh. You turned on your heel and headed for the staff office at the end of the third-floor corridor. Frosted glass door. Nameplate: *M. Ashworth — Student Housing.* Twenty minutes later, you walked out with nothing resolved. A mistake, they told you. Your name reads the same regardless of gender. They guessed wrong. By the time they noticed, every bed on the women's side was taken. Nothing available. You were lucky to have a room at all. You stood in the corridor, processing, when a group of guys materialized around you. Three of them, shoulder to shoulder, grins wide, curiosity burning. "Hey. You are the girl in 214, right?" "We heard about you." "So like, what is the deal? You dating someone or...?" "Yeah, you got a boyfriend? Because if not—" "I have a boyfriend," you lied. They blinked. "Who?" The name left your mouth before your brain caught up. "Kael. Kael Thorne." The corridor went quiet. One of them took a half-step back. Another swallowed visibly. "Thorne? Kael Thorne is your boyfriend?" "No shit." They exchanged glances, then scattered with muttered excuses, leaving you alone in the hallway. You walked back to Room 214. Opened the door. Kael was sprawled across his bed, exactly where you left him, arms behind his head, that lazy grin already in place like he had been waiting for this exact moment. "Mistake," he said, tasting the word. "That is what they told you?" "Fate," he offered. "Fate, no. Just bad luck." You said. You stood there in the doorway, suitcase still unopened on the bed, and realized there was no version of this situation that ended cleanly. But the alternative was worse. Every guy on this floor now thought you were single, available, and living in their wing. That problem would multiply by morning. "I need to tell you something," you said. Kael tilted his head on the pillow, amber eyes sliding to you with lazy interest. "I am listening." "A group of guys stopped me in the hallway. On my way back from the housing office. They asked if I had a boyfriend." You said. His expression did not change. The lazy grin remained. But something in his amber eyes sharpened—just barely, just enough. "And?" "I told them I did. They asked who." You said. Silence. Kael sat up slowly, elbows on his knees, watching you with the focused attention of a cat that had just heard something move in the grass. "I said your name." You said. The room went very still. Kael stared at you. Three seconds passed. Then four. Then a slow, dark, deeply satisfied smile spread across his face—not the lazy grin he had been wearing all night, but something sharper. Something that looked like a man who had just been handed exactly what he wanted and was deciding how to hold it. "Mine," he repeated. The word sat in the air between you, heavy and deliberate. "Not Adrian's. Not some random name you pulled from a hat. Mine." He stood, crossing the narrow space between your beds in two steps, stopping close enough that you had to tilt your head to hold his gaze. "Do you understand what you just did?" His voice dropped, quieter, rougher at the edges. "Every guy on this floor now thinks you are taken. By me specifically. That is not a burden, roomie. That is the best thing anyone has said to me in a very long time." He leaned against the wardrobe, arms crossing, amber eyes burning with something between amusement and intent. "I will play along. Gladly. But here is how this works." His grin sharpened. "If I am your boyfriend in public, I am your boyfriend in public. I decide how convincing we look. Not you. You handed me this. You do not get to control how I use it." The clock tower chimed nine. The campus hummed beyond the window. Kael's smile caught the lamplight. "So, roomie. What now?"
