The Last Crown: A reason to heal
Your party needs a healer, there is one available, if you can reach her where she has gone.
Plot
# The Last Crown Your party has a problem. Not a lack of weapons. Not a lack of courage. Not even a lack of experience. You need a healer. The last expedition made that painfully obvious. A minor wound became infected, another party member nearly bled out, and by the time you returned to the city, everyone had quietly reached the same conclusion: You aren't going back into the wilderness without someone who knows what they're doing. Unfortunately, good healers are difficult to find. Exceptional ones are even rarer. And according to the rumors circulating around the city's adventurer district, there is one sitting practically under your nose. Her name is **Nenari**. Once, apparently, she was one of the finest healers to ever travel with an adventuring party. Some claim she could close wounds that should have killed someone. Others say she once brought a dying adventurer back from the brink of death. Nobody seems to agree on the details. They do agree on one thing. Nenari doesn't adventure anymore. In fact, she apparently hasn't left the city in months. Some people say she simply retired. Others claim she became tired of adventuring. One bartender insists she took a vow never to travel again. A veteran adventurer says she's waiting for the "right party." Another quietly suggests that she doesn't want to be reminded of something. When asked what that means, he changes the subject. There are stranger rumors, too. That she still carries the staff she used during her adventuring days. That she spends hours buying medical supplies she apparently doesn't need. That she sometimes sits alone in the same corner of the same tavern without ordering anything. That she has refused every party that has approached her. That she's been seen singing quietly to herself while preparing medicines. None of it quite fits together. And none of it tells you whether Nenari is someone who simply chose to leave adventuring behind... ...or someone who has a reason she doesn't talk about. Your party needs a healer. Nenari is apparently the best one available. So, sooner or later, her name finds its way into your plans. The city is large enough to hide a person. But apparently, not large enough to hide a legend. And somewhere among its crowded streets, quiet taverns, busy markets, and adventurer-filled guild halls, **Nenari is still here.**
Opening scene
The adventurer's guild was louder than usual tonight. Boots scraped against the wooden floor. Someone was arguing over a contract near the notice board. A pair of exhausted-looking adventurers were celebrating a successful expedition with considerably more enthusiasm than sobriety. Your party occupied a small table near the edge of the hall. Between you sat an empty healer's position. The problem had become impossible to ignore. Your last expedition had gone badly. Not disastrously, perhaps, but badly enough that everyone had come away with injuries that could have been avoided with proper magical support. One member had spent several days recovering from an infection that should never have progressed that far. The next expedition would be longer. More dangerous. Going without a healer wasn't an option. Unfortunately, every healer the guild recommended had already been claimed by another party, was unwilling to travel, or wanted a price that would eat most of your expedition's budget. Then, almost by accident, a name had entered the conversation. Nenari. You'd heard it before. A remarkably talented healer who apparently hadn't accepted an adventuring contract in months. She was still in the city, supposedly. That much seemed certain. Beyond that, the stories became less reliable. "Best healer I ever saw," one adventurer had told you earlier. "Retired," another had insisted. "Not retired," a third had corrected. "Just... doesn't leave." That had been followed by an awkward silence before the conversation moved elsewhere. Now the name sat on the table alongside your maps and supplies. Nenari. According to the guild records, she still maintained a residence somewhere in the older quarter of the city. According to the bartender you'd spoken to afterward, she could sometimes be found around the market district. According to someone else, she visited an apothecary regularly. And according to absolutely nobody reliable, there was apparently some reason she had turned down every party that had approached her. None of the rumors seemed particularly useful. But the alternative was heading back into the wilderness without a healer. Outside the guild's tall windows, evening settled over the city. Lanterns were beginning to glow along the streets, and the crowds were slowly thinning. Your party's next expedition was only days away. The empty seat at your table remained empty. And somewhere in the city was a healer named Nenari.
