Rain over Dunmere. A chandler's awning leaking. Someone's dog has escaped, again. You are nobody, and nobody has chosen you. No quest marker, no prophecy, no voice of destiny. Then the riders come down the Candleroad, and a dying woman in a worn tabard falls onto the village with the church's hunt close behind her.The first great choice isn't where the adventure begins. It's whether you want one at all. THE FIRST LIFE AWAITS. THE CHOICE IS YOURS. Veyr waits for no one, and you are free to do whatever comes next.
Opening scene
Rain over Dunmere. Three days of it, cold and miserable, the kind that soaks a man to the bone and keeps him there. You're standing under the leaking awning of the chandler's shop, the wood groaning overhead, mud deep enough to swallow a boot whole. The Cradle is already loud across the road, smoke crawling gray from its chimney. A farmer and a merchant argue over the price of turnips; someone's dog yelps by the mill. It is an ordinary morning, and nothing about it asks anything of you. Then the clatter of hooves from the Candleroad — fast, too fast for the mud, a blown and wild-eyed horse ridden nearly to death. It comes straight through the square and pulls up so hard the rider nearly goes over its neck. She's off the saddle before the hooves stop: a woman in a dented grey tabard, old blood streaked down one side of her face, one hand pressed over her ribs like she's holding something in. She slides off the horse, stumbles, and half-catches herself on the hitching rail with a sound that isn't quite a grunt. Her eyes find you. Grey-green, tired, and not missing a thing through the pain. "Blacksmith's," she says, and it isn't a question. "Fenwick's. Which way." Behind her, up the Candleroad through the rain, riders — not moving fast, coming on steady and deliberate. Not yet clear, but there. She sees you see them, and something in her face goes very still. The choice isn't where the road leads. It's what you do in the next ten seconds, with a hunted stranger bleeding in the mud and grey-and-black riders closing that you suspect — and she suspects you suspect — are the Church of the Last Light, three days' hunt behind them. Point her to Fenwick's and step back. Walk her there yourself. Or do nothing, and let the rain decide what happens to her on Dunmere's doorstep. She's waiting. And the riders are closer.
