THREE GRADUATING CLASSES. NO PROVEN CONNECTION. ALL EYES ON STONEBRIDGE Investigating the Final Exam Conspiracy THE GRAND ALCHEMICAL ARRAY For nearly two centuries, eight nations have depended on the Grand Alchemical Array, a shared network of enormous anchors supporting the alchemical infrastructure their societies rely upon. Each nation hosts one of the eight primary anchors at one of its leading academies. Haven — Stonebridge Academy of Alchemy Northhold — Northhold Academy of Alchemical Sciences Valcrest — Valcrest Academy of Applied Alchemy Eastmere — Eastmere Academy of Alchemy Irondale — Irondale Academy of Alchemical Engineering Dawnspire — Dawnspire Academy of Alchemical Sciences Ravenmoor — Ravenmoor Academy of Alchemical Research Silverreach — Silverreach Academy of Alchemy Together, the eight anchors form infrastructure that has supported generations of alchemical development across all eight nations. For generations, the system worked. THE FIRST DISASTER Fifteen years ago, an alchemical disaster struck Valcrest Academy of Applied Alchemy during its Final Examination. An entire graduating class was killed along with the professors overseeing their examination. Investigators reconstructed the failure, identified what appeared to be its cause, and new safety measures followed. It was a tragedy. But there was no reason to believe it was anything more. IT HAPPENS AGAIN Nine years ago, another graduating class died during its Final Examination at Eastmere Academy of Alchemy. Five years ago, it happened a third time at Ravenmoor Academy of Alchemical Research. The investigations found different causes. Different experiments. Different equipment. Different failures. Each disaster resulted in new standards, improved procedures, stronger containment systems, and additional safeguards intended to prevent another tragedy. 15 Years Ago — Valcrest Academy of Applied Alchemy 9 Years Ago — Eastmere Academy of Alchemy 5 Years Ago — Ravenmoor Academy of Alchemical Research No connection was ever proven. EVIE'S BREAKTHROUGH Now, at Stonebridge Academy of Alchemy in Haven, graduating student Evelyn “Evie” Mercer has developed a promising new approach to one of the foundations of modern civilization. For generations, every Grand Array anchor has depended upon an enormous central structure. Evie's research questions whether that must remain true. Could the function of one massive anchor be distributed among multiple smaller, synchronized anchors? The idea is not yet a finished replacement for the existing system. Synchronization, load sharing, materials, scaling, and failure behavior still present serious problems. But Evie's experimental work has advanced far enough that Stonebridge requests authorization to test her research against its operational Grand Array anchor. THE COUNCIL VOTE Experiments involving an operational Grand Array anchor require authorization from the Grand Array Council. Evie's proposal reaches its eight Councilors. The technical questions are legitimate. The potential consequences are enormous. A distributed system could change how Grand Array anchors are built, maintained, repaired, and expanded. When the vote is taken, neither side has a majority. Four votes to four. The request is returned for additional information before another vote. For most of the Council, it is an unresolved research proposal. For Councilor Amelia Thorne, Director of Special Alchemical Investigations, something about the meeting refuses to leave her alone. Evie's research reminds her of something. THE CONNECTION Amelia has spent years with the records of the three Final Examination disasters. Investigators had compared how the accidents happened. She begins asking a different question. What were the students researching before they died? Fifteen years ago, researchers at Valcrest had been exploring ways to reduce the physical requirements of a Grand Array anchor. Nine years ago, researchers at Eastmere had investigated whether an anchor's workload could be divided among synchronized structures. Five years ago, researchers at Ravenmoor had been studying redundancy through multiple smaller anchors. Different theories. Different methods. Different terminology. But all three were moving in the same direction. Now Evie Mercer is attempting to demonstrate that several smaller synchronized anchors can perform the function of one massive anchor. Perhaps the graduating classes were never the true targets. Perhaps their research was. It is a pattern. It is a theory. It is not proof. THE ASSIGNMENT Amelia needs someone who can determine whether three supposed accidents were really accidents. She turns to one of the best investigators in her department: You. You specializes in reconstructing catastrophic alchemical failures from the evidence they leave behind — damaged equipment, materials, reaction conditions, contamination, substitutions, procedural failures, and the sequence in which a disaster unfolded. The work can distinguish design failure from operator error, negligence from equipment failure, and accident from deliberate sabotage. With the cooperation of Dean Helena Ward, Amelia arranges for You to join Stonebridge Academy as its new Professor of Alchemical Failure Analysis. The position is legitimate. You will teach Stonebridge's graduating alchemists while quietly investigating whether Amelia's theory has any truth behind it. Official Position: Professor of Alchemical Failure Analysis Confidential Assignment: Determine whether the three historical disasters are connected to the research now being conducted at Stonebridge. The Final Examination is four months away. Between teaching Stonebridge's graduating alchemists, examining Evie's developing research, reopening pieces of three old disasters, and following whatever evidence emerges, You must determine what happened before Stonebridge becomes part of the pattern. If there is a conspiracy behind the Final Examination disasters, why were three graduating classes worth killing? FOUR MONTHS UNTIL THE FINAL EXAMINATION Three disasters were explained. None were connected. Stonebridge may prove whether everyone was wrong.

Opening scene

Stonebridge Academy looked older from inside its gates. Weathered stone buildings surrounded a campus alive with movement, their old facades interrupted by glass-fronted laboratories, exposed alchemical conduits, and newer workshop wings built wherever generations of research had demanded more room. Somewhere beyond the central buildings, mostly hidden from view, stood the massive anchor complex connecting Stonebridge to the Grand Alchemical Array. ![Stonebridge Academy](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6ab0279c31f654846f7efb0d/6ab02bed1f1dfa09534764f4.webp) Four months from now, the graduating class would hold its Final Examination. For most of Stonebridge, that was something to prepare for. For You, Amelia Thorne's assignment made that date particularly relevant. “Professor You?” Dean Helena Ward approached across the courtyard and raised a hand in greeting. She looked much as she had during the arrangements for the appointment: composed, professionally dressed, and moving with the pace of someone whose schedule rarely contained empty space. “Welcome to Stonebridge.” Before she could continue, a sharp *crack* echoed from an open laboratory several buildings away. A few students in the courtyard glanced toward it. Helena didn't. A second later, a young man's voice carried through the open windows. “I said reduce the input, not test whether the bench could survive it!” Laughter followed. Helena's expression barely changed. “You'll learn which sounds require running.” Professor Celeste Arden waited near the entrance to the main academic building, a folder tucked beneath one arm. Helena gestured toward her. “Professor Celeste Arden. Grand Array Systems and senior adviser to the graduating class.” Celeste acknowledged You with a polite nod, her attention lingering just long enough to suggest she was evaluating more than a new colleague. “So you're the failure investigator.” “Failure Analysis professor,” Helena corrected. “I read the appointment.” Celeste looked toward You. “I'm still deciding whether investigating catastrophic failures qualifies someone to teach students how not to create them.” Helena glanced toward the entrance. “Fortunately, you'll have an entire semester to convince her.” --- The main academic building opened into a broad central hall crowded with adult students moving between laboratories and classrooms. Notices for research presentations competed for wall space with job postings, graduation schedules, equipment reservations, and an announcement reminding the senior class that preliminary Final Examination documentation was due in three weeks. Four students stood near one of the boards. ![Stonebridge graduating class](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6ab0279c31f654846f7efb0d/6ab02bed1f1dfa09534764f5.webp) One of them matched the woman at the center of Amelia's Stonebridge files. **Evelyn “Evie” Mercer.** Evie was arguing over a page of calculations with Marcus Vale while Lena Hart leaned against the wall beside them and Adrian Cole attempted to follow both sides of the conversation. Nothing about the scene suggested that any of them considered themselves in immediate danger. Celeste indicated the group. “My graduating class. You'll have all four in Failure Analysis.” Evie's attention shifted toward the unfamiliar professor standing with Helena and Celeste. She lowered the page. “New faculty?” Celeste looked toward You. **“Why don't you introduce yourself?”**
