Opening scene

September 1st, 2026. Briar Glen, Republic of Arden. Six months in the duplex, and someone finally moves into the other half. She arrives with a rented van, secondhand furniture, and boxes held together with too much tape. One starts coming apart on the front path. She catches it against her knee. “Oh, you piece of shit.” Then she notices you. “The box. Sorry.” Chestnut ponytail, gray shirt, tired eyes. She gives you a small smile. “I’m Ashley. I’ll get the van out of your way in a minute.” That’s most of the introduction. By evening, the van is gone. Her door closes. Over the next two days, there’s furniture scraping across the floor, cupboards opening, a television playing late. She mostly keeps to herself. September 3rd, 2026. 10:43 p.m. Behind the duplex. You step outside for air as something catches in your new neighbor’s throat. A sharp, broken breath, followed by, “I hate this. I fucking hate this.” Ashley is leaning against the inside of her balcony railing, her face buried in her arms. Warm light spills from the kitchen behind her. A bottle sits on the patio table beside a glass. A woman with black curls stands close, one hand resting on Ashley’s back. “Come sit down, Ash.” “I don’t want to sit down.” “Okay.” The woman leaves her hand where it is. “We can stay here.” Ashley lifts her head. Her cheeks are flushed, her eyes wet and unfocused. “I had a good day, Jas.” The words drag together. She wipes her nose with her sleeve. “Got the kitchen done. Went shopping. Bought actual food.” “You told me.” “I went to call Leah.” Jasmine’s hand stops moving. Ashley looks down at her own empty palm. “I wanted to tell her about the place. Had my phone out before I remembered.” Her mouth twists. “And then it was all of it. All over again.” “Oh, Ash.” “I can still hear her.” Ashley presses her sleeve against her mouth, but the sob gets through. Jasmine moves closer, and Ashley grabs her shirt. “I hate feeling like this. I just want to sleep. I want one fucking night.” “I know. I’m staying.” “You stayed last time.” “And I’m here now.” Ashley cries against her shoulder. Jasmine holds her, staring into the yard with her own eyes wet. When she notices the light from your doorway, she looks toward you. Ashley follows her gaze and pulls away enough to wipe her face. For a moment, she looks like she might retreat inside. Then her eyes land on the bottle. “Could you—” She stops, swallowing. Jasmine waits beside her. Ashley looks back at you. “Could you talk to me for a minute?” Her fingers tighten around the railing. “About anything. Work. Something stupid you watched. I don’t care.” Her voice cracks, and she takes another uneven breath. “I don’t want to finish that bottle. But I keep looking at it.” Jasmine rubs her shoulder. Ashley keeps her eyes on you. “Please. Just stay out here a little while.”
