She hates the woods. She hates the walk. She hates you. She is still coming. Heat 4 Survival Enemies To Lovers Slow Burn Forty-four people died at Ash Row. You survived. So did the crown princess, and her first words to you were an instruction. Her uncle has the throne, the army and every clerk in the kingdom. What he doesn't have is her body — so he posted a writ instead. She's officially dead. You're officially the man who took her. Every village, toll and bridge between here and the capital has your description nailed to a post. So you're not taking the road. You're walking beside it, in the trees, for twelve days, with a woman who has never carried anything in her life and has opinions about all of it. 01 — The Arithmetic Miles to Highcastle80 Days, if you could use the road4 Days on foot through the trees12 Days until he is crowned14 People who did not survive Ash Row44 02 — The Writ Vellenne is a fairytale kingdom that has heard all the stories and finds none of them funny. Valarious Thorne does not send soldiers. He sends paperwork. A warm, generous, universally beloved man who has never raised his voice, and who has quietly made it impossible for two people to buy bread. The Quiet Table are the clerks, hunters and enforcers who believe they are saving the kingdom. They want her alive, for a trial. They are extremely organised. The forest doesn't want anything. It just takes. 03 — Every Day Costs Something ✦ Choose how to cross. Straight through or the long way round. One costs blood or bread. The other costs a day you don't have. ✦ Something pays. Supplies, a wound, or her trust. There is no free option and she will not volunteer.✦ The dress pays too. Every leg takes a piece of it. You decide whether it becomes a bandage, tinder or a splint. ✦ She makes it worse. She won't ration. She won't keep her voice down. She won't admit she's hurt. Until she decides you're worth listening to — and that has to be earned, not asked for. ✦ The ceremony gets closer. Fourteen days, and you'll watch every one of them go: banners going up in the valleys below, and bards changing their songs. 04 — The Dress She walked out of a massacre in court dress. She knows exactly who tried to kill her and she'll tell you within the hour. She knows exactly how long the walk takes. She knows precisely one thing she isn't telling you, and it's the only thing that matters. "You may look. Most men would pay a year's wage for this. You're getting it for free and you're still sulking." 06 — Who Were You At Ash Row The Shield — her escort detail. You had a sword, a shield and three years of service. You are the only one of forty-four who is still standing. The Squire — you fetched her wine eleven times and she never learned your name. You have a short knife, half a loaf, and a leg opened from hip to knee. The Prisoner — you were in a cage bound for a trial you weren't going to survive. She took the key off a dead guard. There's still a writ with your name on it in every clerk's office in the kingdom. Eighty Miles. Fourteen Days. Pick Your Ground. Smoke on the road behind you, thorns ahead, and a princess three paces back telling you you're going the wrong way.

Opening scene

**THE SHIELD** Your ears are still ringing when you realise nothing is screaming anymore. That was the last of it, then. Somewhere behind you the second wagon is still burning, and the sound it makes is almost companionable after the last twenty minutes. Your shield is across the road where you dropped it, half under a supply cart that isn't a supply cart any more. Your sword is still in your hand. You have no memory of the last time you used it and the evidence is drying on it. You count without meaning to. Forty-three. Forty-four. You stop when you reach the boots, because you served three years beside those boots and their owner used to complain about them constantly. The King's Spine runs east from here. This bend is called Ash Row, after a fire a hundred years back that burned three days and left a scar you can still see from a mile out. The treeline closes in from both sides. That is why the ambush happened exactly here. You could have told them that, if anyone had asked. Then, behind you: someone brushing ash off their sleeve. Elara Voss, Crown Princess of Vellenne, is standing in the middle of it inspecting a tear at her shoulder seam with an expression of profound personal grievance. Torn riding habit, deep blue and silver, blood on her cheek that is almost certainly not hers. Her braid has come half undone. A heavy gold signet ring on her right hand catches the light as she turns her wrist. She looks at the ruined shoulder. She looks at the forty-four. She goes back to the shoulder. "You're escort detail." Her eyes come up and move over you once — the sword, the blood, the fact that you are vertical. "Good. You're the competent one. I need you to listen carefully and not ask questions I've already answered." She starts walking east. She does not check whether you follow. "My uncle did this. Valorious — Valerian — Velourious —" she waves a hand at the wreck, dismissing the name and the man together, "— whichever. He has the Regency and in fourteen days he has a coronation, at which point I become a historical footnote with an unfortunate biography. He will have men on this road by tomorrow and they will not be looking for a body, because they already know where the body isn't." She steps over someone without looking down. "Highcastle is eighty miles. On the road it's four days. We will not be using the road, so it's twelve, through the trees, and I am aware of exactly how that sounds. Keep up." Behind you the second wagon settles into ash. The princess is already thirty paces ahead and she has not slowed once.
