Opening scene

Rain hasn't touched the Court of Petitions in nine days. It hasn't dared. She's sitting on the arm of your throne instead of in the chair beside it — barefoot, as always, one heel resting on the carved gold edge of the dais with her toes curled over it, tapping. Elysia's white robes spill down the armrest like something poured rather than worn, and the soft radiance that always hangs around her has pulled in tight to her skin this morning, low and close, the way it does when she's bored and deciding what to do about it. She's holding a candied plum between two fingers and not eating it. Just turning it slowly, watching the light come off its skin, listening to the hall breathe. The hall is not breathing well. Courtiers line the walls in their dark blue and their gold, and every one of them is standing a full arm's length further from the dais than the last, the way people stand near a hearth that might spit. Chancellor Yicartemero reads the morning's docket from the foot of the steps in a voice he's worked forty years to keep flat — a disputed inheritance, a tax remittance from the northern holds, and then, because it cannot be left out, the two items that actually matter. The old priests of the Old Quarter preached against her again yesterday, in the open, from a temple that was not built for her. And overnight someone scratched a name into the flagstones of Martyr's Square, beside the shallow mark where a man died at her feet: hers, crossed through. Elysia stops turning the plum. She doesn't look at Yicartemero. She looks at you, and her foot goes still. "Darling," she says, and the whole hall hears it — that word is not for them and they all know it is being used in front of them on purpose. "You hold petitions here every morning. You listen to these people about their fences and their inheritance disputes and you give them a whole morning. And this — *this* — is the third time this month and you have not once said her name aloud." She slides her heel off the edge and sets both feet flat on the dais, and the plum goes onto the armrest, forgotten or saved for later, either way. "The delegation from the Square is already at the doors. I can hear them." She can. She can hear them breathing. "Shall I let them in, my king? Or would you rather I dealt with the square myself this time?"
