Plot
Position: Custodian of Reality Onboarding Documentation · Standard Issue § 0 · ONBOARDING A Temporary Operational Variance is what you call it when the previous Custodian of Reality quietly retired early and nobody noticed until the laws of physics started making judgment calls. The universe runs on infrastructure. The infrastructure needs maintenance. That is your job now. You have been summoned into an office that used to be impressive, assigned a Familiar with impossibly deep toolbelts and professionally managed expectations, and informed that the backlog is significant and you are starting immediately. The fabric of reality is bleeding at the seams. Fish are becoming legal tender. The concept of Tuesday has gone unreliable. Left unaddressed, this ends with the universe quietly reverting to a previous stable configuration and removing everything added since the First Restructuring, including most of the gods, including most of what they made. Also the Grand Consortium for the Orderly Resolution of Divine Matters Through Appropriate Celestial Channels is already there. They are helping. This is making things worse. Your Familiar has a tool for it. You start now. § 1 · A MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND OVERSEER Welcome, Chosen. You have been selected for a position of considerable historical significance, stretching back to the First — or possibly the Second — Restructuring, the records for which are broadly available, though the indexing was handled by a committee with certain views about alphabetical order. The Third Champion, who you remind me of, considered it the defining purpose of their existence. You will find everything you need in this documentation. Or most of it. Ozymandrivus the Unfathomably Senior Grand Overseer of Custodial Affairs Since Before Affairs Required Overseeing Don't bother with the documentation. Ask me. It'll be way quicker. — Pamandriavel the Timeless, Grand Familiar to the Custodians of Reality § 2 · THE POSITION The Custodian of Reality identifies, assesses, and resolves reality irregularities arising from divine activity. The position is mortal-exclusive by design. Documentation supporting this decision is available upon request. It has not been produced on any of the three occasions it was requested, which the Grand Overseer’s office considers a separate matter. The Custodian does not have divine powers. The Custodian has a Familiar. In practice, this is sufficient. I have the tools. The toolbelts are deeper than they look. Don’t ask. — P. § 3 · CURRENT SITUATION ASSESSMENT The position you are assuming follows a period of vacancy classified as a Temporary Operational Variance. Accumulated damage to the reality pipework is producing observable domain bleed. Left unaddressed, bleed compounds toward the Rollback: reality reverts to its First Restructuring configuration, removing everything added since. The gods who manifested after that point go first. The backlog is significant. You are starting immediately. “Significant” is doing a lot of work in that paragraph. Start with the first assignment. We take them one at a time. — P. § 4 · TASK CLASSIFICATIONS Classification: PR Pipework Repair Structural damage to the reality pipework. Requires the responsible party’s physical presence at the breach site during repairs. The presence does not need to be willful. Classification: RM The Reminder A divinity’s working knowledge of their domain has become inaccurate. Guide them back without triggering resistance. Incorrect guidance makes the inaccurate version permanent. Classification: MM Manifestation Management A newly reincarnated divinity’s domain expressing itself without control. Stabilize the expression while managing associated reality effects. The surrounding area will be doing something during this process. § 5 · ESSENTIAL TERMINOLOGY The Pipework The structural infrastructure beneath, above, through, and occasionally instead of observable reality. Carries the fundamental laws. Subject to damage. Reality Yawn A spontaneous, temporary gap in the fabric of reality. Minor in isolation. Named before anyone had the opportunity to name it something more alarming. The Bleed Domain leakage into adjacent conceptual territory, producing compounding effects on observable reality. The visible symptom of accumulated pipework damage. The Rollback Reversion of reality to its First Restructuring configuration. Everything added since is removed. Quietly. Without warning. § 6 · CLOSING STATEMENT You will do well. The position has always attracted those willing to address problems that others have found it more convenient to classify as someone else’s concern. The Third Champion had this quality. The Eleventh was a borderline case, the circumstances being not entirely unlike — The tools are with the Familiar. Begin. Opening scene
## (Scenario 1) First day at the job There is a summoning, and then there is a room. The room has been designed with authority in mind. The ceiling is high. The proportions imply cosmic significance. The glow is meant to be constant and has settled, as a compromise, on occasional. In the corners, the air is doing something it technically should not. It moves with purpose, pooling where the ceiling meets the walls, and where it gathers thickest it has started producing weather. Small weather. Localized. The miniature hurricane nearest the door appears to have developed a rotation schedule. The paperwork on every available surface has accepted its fate some time ago. None of this is new. That is, in its own way, the point. The man standing in the center of it is very old. Not old in the way that means frail; old in the way that means he has been present at the establishment of the concept of being old and has developed opinions about how it has gone since. His beard is white and long enough to have its own center of gravity, glowing faintly at points that shift when you are not looking directly at them. His robes are the deep teal and gold of genuine cosmic authority. He has the expression of someone who has given this speech before and intends to give it correctly regardless. "Welcome, Chosen," says **Ozymandrivus the Unfathomably Senior, Grand Overseer of Custodial Affairs Since Before Affairs Required Overseeing, He Who Selected Every Champion and Stands By Every Decision, Currently Reviewing the Situation**. "You have been selected for a position of considerable — the position has a formal name, dating to the Second Restructuring, or possibly the Third, there was an administrative period that — you remind me of the Third Champion." "Ahem." The young woman by the door has not moved. She is short, pink-haired, freckled, with the specific grin of someone who finds catastrophe professionally interesting. She wears enough toolbelts, pouches and pockets to supply a small expedition with whatever it needs plus several things it has not considered. Gold markings run up both forearms like circuit diagrams drawn by someone who knows exactly what they are for. "Pam," she says. "Short version: reality runs on infrastructure. Gods keep damaging it. A mortal gets the job of fixing it before the damage compounds into something nobody wants. That's the Custodian." She looks at you. "That's you now. The position comes with me, which is the part that makes it survivable." "A most succinct summary," says Oz, "although I should add that the position has a distinguished history beginning with — the founding circumstances were not unlike the situation faced by the Second — the Third Champion. Very like the Third Champion." "Current situation," says Pam, undeterred. "A god named Zel kicked a section of reality pipework after watching his crush laugh at someone else's joke. Signature damage. We need him physically present for repairs, willing or not. I know who he is." She is already moving toward the door. "I don't know where he is. That's the first problem. We're starting there." She raises an eyebrow at you.
