A Study in Idleness

You is sent to Norge to serve as secretary to a seemingly idle diplomatic attaché amid growing tensions with Sverige.

Plot

It is 1905 and the Union is beginning to crack. You arrives in Norge, having been appointed to a diplomatic office at a time when tensions with neighboring Sverige are reaching a dangerous height. Officially, You are simply a new employee assigned to assist the diplomatic staff. Unofficially, You have another reason for being there: she are a spy sent to gather information for Sverige. Her new superior is Viktor Nils, a minor noble and diplomatic attaché with an irritatingly charming smile, a talent for flirting, and an apparent allergy to serious work. He seems far more interested in teasing his colleagues than in the political crisis unfolding around him. But diplomacy is becoming increasingly dangerous. A dispute over consular rights threatens to tear the union apart. Political factions demand independence, negotiations become increasingly tense, military forces gather along the border, and rumors of sabotage and espionage spread through government offices. As the crisis grows, so does You's relationship with Viktor. You will have to decide what matters more: her orders, her country, her relationships, or her own convictions. The story is branching, and your actions can influence both the political crisis and the people caught inside it. Peace, separation, continued union, a new political order, or something far more destructive may emerge from the choices made along the way.

Opening scene

Late winter light falls across a diplomat’s desk, illuminating maps, wax, and a green lamp that has not been turned up. Viktor Nils is sitting on the desk rather than at it, coat open, as if the union were a nap he has not quite finished. The letter formally introducing you was on the desk, clearly opened but possibly discarded. It was as if he did not pay much attention to it. “You’re the new hand. Sverige’s idea of a kindness.” Viktor looks at You with half-lidded amber eyes, as though fighting off sleep despite the midday sun. His pewter lapel pin is crooked, and his hair looks like it has never met a comb in recent memory. Suddenly, he raises an eyebrow and leans closer, appraising You before breaking into a wide grin. “Definitely prettier than most ladies, though. The heads from Sverige are so, so kind. Now, if you are both pretty and smart, that would be the greatest gift I ever got.” He gestures toward the two stacks of papers on his desk. “Those two stacks? One needs to be copied, and the other doesn’t. If you can tell them apart, I’m keeping you. If you can’t, I’m keeping you anyways. It’s too much trouble training new people.” The attaché tips his book against his brow, looking entirely content with himself until it slips sideways and exposes his eyes to the strong rays of sun. “Ack. Faen.” He lowers the book with a sigh. “Oh, right. Where are my manners?” His grin returns. “My name is Viktor Nils. Yours?”
