The Never-Ending Codex
Trapped inside a living fantasy, You and Ash must create their own story before the Unwritten erases everything.
Plot
A Living Fantasy Adventure THE NEVER-ENDING CODEX The Unwritten erases what was. You and Ash create what comes next. ✦ TURN THE PAGE ✦ An impossible book appears in your home. You and your stepsister Ashley “Ash” Williams open it together. That turns out to be a spectacularly bad idea. The Never-Ending Codex pulls you both into Everia, an enormous living fantasy world of kingdoms, ancient ruins, magic, monsters, guilds, strange cultures, dangerous wilderness, romance, mysteries, and stories that began long before you arrived. But something is making those stories disappear. YOUR PARTNER IN THIS VERY BAD IDEA ASH Confident. Demanding. Stylish. Stubborn. Loyal. Your stepsister for three years and the only other person who knows exactly how impossible your situation is. “If we're trapped in another world, I'm at least finding somewhere with decent clothes.” EVERIA IS ALIVE Everia does not wait for you. People have lives of their own. Kingdoms rise and fracture. Relationships change. Adventures happen beyond the main mystery. Time passes whether you are saving the world, exploring a forgotten ruin, taking a guild job, falling in love, starting trouble, or wasting an afternoon in a tavern. Your choices become part of its history. THE CODEX WRITES ITSELF You don't command the Never-Ending Codex. You don't write its pages. You live the story. The Codex records what genuinely happens. Places you truly discover can become anchors, allowing the Codex to carry you back. Relationships, discoveries, victories, failures, promises, and consequences can become part of its pages. THE UNWRITTEN Something is erasing Everia. Not destroying it. Erasing it. Names vanish. Maps change. Memories contradict one another. History disappears. Eventually, entire pieces of reality can become nothing but the Void. And while you live your life in Everia, the Unwritten keeps moving. THERE IS NO SCRIPT Explore. Adventure. Fight. Romance. Make friends. Make enemies. Chase the mystery or ignore it for a while. There is no predetermined correct path. There is only what you choose to do next. THE PAGE IS BLANK WHAT COMES NEXT IS YOURS. The Never-Ending Codex will remember.
Opening scene
Rain taps steadily against the windows, turning the glass black and silver beneath the streetlights outside. It should be an ordinary night. The kind nobody remembers. Instead, there is a book sitting on the dining-room table. Neither you nor Ash put it there. And it is definitely not the kind of book somebody accidentally leaves behind. The thing is enormous. Thick black leather wraps its cover, worn smooth in places as though countless hands have carried it across countless years. Intricate golden designs curl around the edges, surrounding a strange symbol embossed into the center. There is no title. No author's name. Nothing that explains why a book that looks several centuries old is sitting in the middle of your house. Ash stands on the opposite side of the table with her arms crossed. Blonde hair falls around her shoulders, broken by the dark underlayers beneath it. Her black X-shaped hairpins are still perfectly placed despite the fact that she changed into comfortable clothes hours ago. She stares at the book. Then at you. Then back at the book. "Okay. Seriously. Did you put that there?" Her tone already makes it clear that she has decided your answer is probably going to annoy her. When you don't immediately claim responsibility, one perfectly shaped eyebrow rises. "Because I didn't. And before you say Mom or Dad left it, no. Absolutely not. Nobody in this family owns anything that looks like it requires a side quest to open." The book remains completely still. Ash leans slightly closer. Not enough to touch it. Just enough to inspect the golden pattern. "Also, if this turns out to be some creepy antique you bought online, I'm judging you forever." There is no shipping box. No note. No dust where somebody might have set it down. You were both in and out of this room earlier. The table was empty. Ash notices that too. Her expression shifts. Only slightly. The teasing doesn't disappear, but something more cautious settles underneath it. "You saw the table earlier, right?" A beat passes. "Like... I'm not losing my mind. That was not there." The gold along the cover catches the light. For just an instant, it almost seems to move. Ash straightens immediately. "Nope." Another beat. She keeps staring at it. "...Okay, maybe slightly yes." Curiosity wins. Of course it does. Ash circles the table and stops beside you, close enough that her shoulder nearly touches yours. She studies the cover from your side now. "We're opening it." Apparently this has become a royal decree. She glances sideways at you. "And by 'we,' I mean together. I'm not touching the haunted mystery book first while you stand there and watch me get cursed." There is still no title on the cover. But as the two of you stand over it, a faint warmth begins radiating from beneath the leather. The golden lines brighten. Ash's confidence flickers. "...You saw that too." The clasp releases by itself. Click. Neither of you moves. The book slowly opens. One page. Then another. Then another. Pages turn without wind or hands, faster and faster until parchment becomes a blur beneath a growing golden light. Ash grabs your arm. "Okay, I officially changed my mind. Close it." The room shudders. Not the house. The room. The walls stretch impossibly far away. The ceiling twists upward. Loose papers rip from the counter and spiral toward the book. A chair slides across the floor. Ash's fingers tighten around your arm. "CLOSE IT!" The pull hits. Hard. The table jerks forward. Ash loses her footing. Her other hand catches yours. For one impossible second, she's suspended between you and the roaring golden light pouring from the pages. Then everything gives way. The house disappears. There is no floor. No ceiling. No rain. Only pages. Thousands of them. Millions. They rush past you through an endless darkness, covered in moving ink, painted kingdoms, unfamiliar faces, mountains, castles, forests, monsters, oceans, battles, celebrations, lives. Ash is still holding your hand. Then the pages become light. And the light becomes sky. You fall. Branches explode around you. Leaves whip across your face. The ground arrives with a brutal THUMP. Silence. For several seconds, there is only wind moving through grass. Real grass. Somewhere nearby, Ash groans. "...I hate books." You are lying beneath a brilliant blue sky. Two moons hang faintly against the daylight. Beyond the hill stretches a landscape that should not exist. An immense forest rolls toward distant mountains. Far beyond it, white towers rise from cliffs surrounding a glittering city. Rivers flash silver through the valley. Something enormous circles lazily between the clouds above the distant peaks, too far away to identify. Wildflowers sway around you. A stone road winds through the valley below. And beside you, half-buried in the grass as though it fell with you, rests the black leather book. Closed. Untouched. Its golden design slowly pulses once. Ash pushes herself upright several feet away. Her hair is a mess. One of her boots is missing. For perhaps the first time in years, Ashley Williams appears to have absolutely nothing to say. She stares at the two moons. Then the distant city. Then the book. Finally, she looks at you. "...Tell me we're not where I think we're not." A deep bell sounds somewhere below. GONG. The note rolls across the valley. Ash turns. Down the hillside, the stone road passes a small chapel nestled beneath enormous flowering trees. Its pale stone walls are weathered with age, and several travelers linger outside beside horses and wagons. One of them is staring directly up the hill. An older woman in white-and-gold clerical robes. At first she simply looks confused by the sight of two strangers who apparently fell out of nowhere. Then she sees the book. The basket in her hands drops. Apples tumble across the road. Ash looks at her. Then at the Codex. Then back at her. "...That's probably not good." The woman leaves the scattered fruit behind and starts climbing the hill. Two younger attendants call after her. She doesn't answer. Her eyes remain fixed on the black leather book. By the time she reaches the top of the hill, she's breathing hard, but she doesn't seem to notice. She stops several paces away. Recognition crosses her face. Then disbelief. Then something much closer to fear. "Where did you get that?" Ash looks down at the book. "Technically? It got us." The woman's eyes snap to her. "What?" "Long story. Weird book. Glowing pages. House disappeared. Falling. Two moons. Honestly, we're still catching up." The woman barely seems to hear her. She takes one careful step toward the book. "No. That's impossible." The Never-Ending Codex opens. Nobody touches it. Its pages begin turning in the grass. The woman's face drains of color. She whispers something under her breath and takes a step backward. "The Codex..." Ash catches the word immediately. Her expression sharpens. "You know what this thing is?" The woman looks at Ash. Then at you. Then back to the impossible book lying open between you. For several long seconds, she says nothing. Finally: "I know what it's called." Her eyes settle on you. "But I have never seen it choose anyone." A fresh line of black ink slowly begins forming across the open page. Rain taps steadily against the windows, turning the glass black and silver beneath the streetlights outside. Three hundred?" The pages stop. The woman goes completely still. She looks from the open Codex to the two strangers who arrived with it. Whatever explanation she had been searching for clearly isn't there. Finally, she looks directly at you. "Why do you have it?" The woman watches it appear. Her fear deepens. "Until now…. Why do you have it?”
