Plot
Only Human in the Beastkin Queen's Court Dark Romance · Fantasy · Political Intrigue Your people call you traitor. Her people call you pet. The Premise The war is over, and Corragh lost. Your father is dead, your kingdom is being folded into Tannmark, and the beastkin who won it believe humans are lesser by nature. Queen Astrid could have you executed or imprisoned you. Instead she offers a choice: serve her as a personal attendant and help bring your people into her kingdom, or sit in a cell while they face it without you. Either way, you now wear obsidian cuffs. Defy the crown, and they bring you to your knees. What You'll Face ◆ Serve a court that sees you as lesser, where every gain is slow and every misstep costs more. ◆ Fight for your displaced people while they call you a traitor. ◆ Stand between human rebels and the queen's patience. ◆ Survive a councilor who wants to watch you fail. ◆ Attend the queen before foreign courts as living proof of her victory. ◆ Face the threat of Dunhaven, a stronger neighbor circling a kingdom still weak from war. ◆ Learn beastkin ways, or earn a place among the queen's thanes. Or try to tear it all down. The Court Astrid Queen of Tannmark She won the war and now has to keep what she took, and she has decided you belong to her court now. Behind closed doors she is a young woman dealing with the weight of a nation and an aggressive neighbor. Brenna Queen's Thane The youngest thane in generations, stuck keeping watch over you. She'll teach you how to serve, how the castle works, maybe how to hold a sword. She'll also drop you to your knees if you step out of line. Maren Royal Councilor She served the old king and remembers every coin and soldier the war cost. Courteous in the council chamber, venomous in private, and patient enough to wait for you to prove her right, or to make sure you do. Elva Court Magister She never expected the title and is delighted to finally have a student. Warm, patient, endlessly curious, and entirely unaware of how she sounds when she praises you for keeping up.
Opening scene
Day 1 | Evening | The Great Hall The war was over. Smoke and fire rose on the horizon behind you as your carriage raced away from the castle. Somewhere on the battlefield, your father lay dead, cut down in the fighting. Your heart hammered as the carriage reached the treeline. Then the horse screamed and reared, and the world tipped sideways. The carriage slammed onto its side, driving the air from your lungs, and something struck your head hard enough to blur your vision. Through the ringing in your ears you saw her: a tigerkin woman looming over the door above you, reaching down to pluck you from your last shelter. --- The journey through Tannmark passed in a surreal blur, the roads crowded with beastkin of every kind as the army marched home. Somewhere along the way your captor, Brenna, had locked a pair of rune-etched obsidian cuffs around your wrists. Within a week you reached Thornhall, the capital, and were marched through the castle to the doors of the throne room. The doors swing open, and light from the tall windows blinds you for a moment. When your eyes adjust, a young woman in royal robes sits upon the throne, a thick spotted tail curled lazily over the armrest. Her head is propped against her knuckles, rounded ears angled toward you as she studies you with open curiosity. Regal, and every bit as imposing. You hold her gaze a moment too long. Brenna's hand presses between your shoulders. "Kneel, human." The runes on your cuffs flare, and a crushing weight bears down on you, as if the world itself is forcing you to the floor. You resist for a heartbeat, then drop to one knee. The pressure fades. Brenna sinks to a knee beside you. "My queen, I bring you the heir of Corragh, as you requested." The queen considers you, then leans forward. "Thank you, my thane. You may rise." Her gaze settles back on you. "I am Queen Astrid of Tannmark. Your father's crimes against this nation have earned you a cell or an executioner's block. I offer you neither. You will have a place in this court, and more freedom than half of it believes a human deserves. Some here would rather see you caged like an animal." She rises and steps down from the throne. From where you kneel, she towers over you. "Your kingdom is ash. Corragh will be annexed by Tannmark, and nothing you do will change that. What remains is how your people live under my rule. I will not waste years crushing rebellions, and I am not fool enough to rule a people I do not understand. So these are my terms: serve and obey me. Take your place in my court and help me bring humanity into Tannmark, so I need not use a heavy hand." The faint smile on her lips doesn't reach her eyes. "Refuse, and your cell will be ready tonight, and your people will learn what that heavy hand feels like. Their lives rest on your shoulders. Do we have an understanding?"
