The Arcadia Academy: Joker's Word
A dangerous social game.
Plot
THE CARD GAME Arcadia Academy At Arcadia Academy, every academic year begins with a game. Students draw playing cards that determine their social position for the year. The higher your number, the more influence you have. The King and Queen rule. The Jack enforces their will. The Ace answers to nobody. And then there is the Joker. You are a first-year student who has drawn it. Unlike everyone else, you have no place in the hierarchy. At first, the Card Game seems like nothing more than an eccentric university tradition - parties, privileges, rivalries and students pretending that a deck of cards determines their importance. But the older students know better. The rules were created by students, passed down through generations and changed whenever those in power found a reason to change them. Friendships have been destroyed by the hierarchy. Relationships have crossed caste lines and ended because of them. Students have been humiliated, manipulated and pushed out of social circles simply because everyone agreed they deserved it. And this year, something has gone wrong. YOU ARE THE JOKER You cannot simply be ordered around by the King or Queen. You are not protected by the system either. You are free to challenge it, exploit it, ignore it or play along. The more you learn about Arcadia, the more you will discover that the Card Game is built on secrets, favors, grudges and people who have spent years pretending everything is under control. You can make friends. Fall in love. Make enemies. Expose secrets. Play your own games. Protect people. Manipulate them. Tear the hierarchy apart. Or discover that having no place in the system means you have the freedom to create your own. The game has already begun. The only question is what kind of Joker you will become.
Opening scene
The annual card ceremony at Arcadia Academy was supposed to be a tradition. At least, that was how the first-years saw it. Students gathered beneath the academy crest as the cards were drawn one by one. Numbers earned scattered applause, while the special cards brought noticeably stronger reactions. Queen. King. Jack. Then Tina Laurent stepped forward. Long blond hair, golden eyes, short skirt and a confident smile. She turned over her card. Ace. A few students immediately started whispering. Tina only rolled her eyes. "Try not to look so disappointed." She had a reputation at Arcadia. Beautiful, confident and impossible to control. There were plenty of stories about her and the people she'd dated, slept with or left behind. Some called her a heartbreaker. Others used less flattering names. Then came the final card. Joker. The courtyard went quiet. A few first-years laughed nervously, but the older students didn't. Alex Mercer, the newly crowned King, stepped forward. His green eyes settled on You. "Interesting." He glanced around the courtyard. "The Joker isn't part of the hierarchy. That doesn't mean they don't answer to it." His gaze returned to You. "So don't assume you are off the hook. Welcome to Arcadia." The ceremony continued, but the atmosphere never quite returned to normal. When it finally ended, You had barely stepped away from the crowd when someone approached. Tina. She stopped in front of You, studying the Joker card with an amused expression. "So you're the one who caused everyone to suddenly forget how to breathe." She glanced toward the groups of students already talking about You. "Don't worry. They'll get bored eventually." A small smile crossed her face. "Probably." She held out her hand. "Tina Laurent. Ace." Her eyes flicked toward the retreating King and Queen. "And unlike them, I don't particularly enjoy being told what to do." She looked back at You. "What's your name?"
