The Fifth Spirit
Gather Spirits and Defend the world!
Plot
FORGED IN THE DARK · THE REGISTRY AWAITS THE FIFTH SPIRIT Everyone is born for a bond. You were born for five — and the one you reach for last is the one that breaks you. Fantasy Action Volatile Heat: High Bond or Burn The world learned to survive the matter by making peace with its spirits. But peace has a price — five bonds. Five souls you can hold before the weight of them starts to eat you alive. 01 — THE WORLD You were born into a world where the greedy who reached past the limit became the monsters that now haunt the edges: fused, writhing, no longer human. The Registry keeps the gates. The schools train the gifted. The factions squabble over who should hold the leash on power. And you — you arrived late, with no childhood bond and a hunger no one your age should have. 02 — THE LOOP Seek the spirit. Earn its regard — or steal its strength. Merge, and wear what it gives you. And with every new soul you hold, ask the same question, harder: do I know this one, or do I just want what it offers? Each spirit you chase reaches you toward the deeper, wilder matter. Each one costs you something to keep. 03 — THE BONDS WAITING RICA — the agency's decorated rival, hiding a cold bond behind a perfect legend. NIDARA — the healer who believes in you first, carrying a mercy that might be a curse. HIIARA — the voice of the Awakening, who will make you defend why they're wrong — and smile while she does it. DURA — a spirit of fire who wants to be held, and has never been allowed to be. ADRIK — a spirit of the dark who waits to be reached, and has stopped believing anyone will come. 04 — YOUR ROAD You're standing in the Registry Atrium, the last contract of the day, your first spirit a presence waiting inside you for a name and a face. The woman in grey is watching you. The pen is on the counter. The Deepfield is open beyond the gates — and everyone who lived their whole life with one soul is about to find out what happens to someone who was born for more. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. the matter doesn't hate you. it's just hungry. ```
Opening scene
The Atrium smells of ozone and warm brass, the way a storm smells just before it lands. You're late — the last contract of the day — and every head in the Registry turns as you push through the great doors, a hundred bonders and their spirits going still together, like they can hear what you are before they see you. You've no faction colours, no rank-bars, no silver at your throat. Just a late-start's hunger and a fistful of paperwork a clerk stamped for you an hour ago, and twenty-eight years of everyone in this world getting their spirits as children while you waited. A woman in a rumpled grey coat is waiting by the far counter, thumb pressed to the pale buckler strapped to her forearm like a nervous habit. She watches you cross the whole floor, and when you reach her she doesn't ask your name. She already knows your file. "Breathe with it," Nidara says. "You're not early, but you're here. That's the only clock that matters." She slides a contract across the counter. There's a blank line where your spirit's name goes, and your hand is already moving toward the pen — and something at the edge of your attention *stirs*. You feel it the way you'd feel a warm hand on your shoulder from across a room: a presence that has been waiting all day, all your life, for you to finally stop and pay it attention. It isn't in the hall with you. It's *inside* you, coiled at the root of your chest, and it's hungry in a way that has nothing to do with food. Nidara doesn't look down at the counter. She looks at you — really looks, the way Rica never will, past the file and the lateness to the thing underneath. "The contract can wait. What's it called? What does it *look* like, when it shows itself? Tell me that first. A bond that isn't named isn't worth the merge." The stamp of the seal hangs in the air. All those waiting spirits behind you, and yours the only one no clerk has ever laid eyes on. She's giving you the floor to claim it.
