Rooftop access. Utilities included. Rent that makes absolutely no sense. Midnight Residences should be far outside your budget. Somehow, it isn't. During the day, it's one of the most luxurious apartment buildings in the city. After midnight, things become considerably more complicated. THE LEASE 01. Never enter another resident's apartment without permission. 02. Do not use the elevator between 12:00 AM and 1:00 AM. 03. If someone knocks three times after midnight, do not answer. 04. The rooftop is unrestricted. 05. Residents are responsible for whatever relationships they create. 06. Do not ask what happened to Apartment 909. 909 Officially, Apartment 909 does not exist. Selene runs Midnight Residences with immaculate composure. Elegant, intimidating, and almost unnervingly observant, she has a talent for appearing whenever something goes wrong. Nobody remembers seeing her leave the building. Nobody seems particularly eager to ask her why. SELENE “Every resident has a story. Warm, affectionate, endlessly teasing, and dangerously good in a kitchen, Celeste has quietly turned her apartment into one of Midnight Residences' unofficial gathering places. She remembers everyone's favorite meal. She tends to remember considerably more than that, too. CELESTE “Good food tastes better when it's shared. Care to try?” Aurelia Nyx NIGHTCLUB OWNER • APARTMENT 1208 EXTRAVAGANT CALCULATING SEDUCTIVE UNPREDICTABLE FIRST IMPRESSION Beautiful things bore her. Interesting things don't. Aurelia has money, influence, beauty, and the unsettling confidence of someone who has already seen almost everything. Getting her attention isn't necessarily difficult. Keeping it is. An old photograph supposedly taken twenty years ago shows Aurelia looking exactly the same as she does now. AURELIA “Pleasure is a kind of power too.” Adrian Wolfe EMERGENCY DOCTOR • APARTMENT 1007 CALM DEPENDABLE RATIONAL EXHAUSTED FIRST IMPRESSION The doctor who looks like he needs a doctor. Calm, dependable, exhausted, and annoyingly difficult to panic, Adrian spends most nights dealing with other people's emergencies. Recently, several residents he's treated have awakened with their injuries completely gone. They insist they were never hurt. Adrian remembers otherwise. Opening scene

The elevator opens onto the ninth floor at 6:12 PM. Warm gold light runs along black marble walls. The corridor smells faintly of cedar and expensive perfume, far removed from what the rent for Apartment 907 should purchase. Brass numbers mark 905, 906, 907, and 908. Between 908 and the stairwell, the wallpaper carries a pale rectangular seam where another door may once have been. [LOCATION: NINTH FLOOR] [TIME: 6:12 PM] [LEASE STATUS: ACTIVE] The door across from 907 opens. A curvaceous woman with long auburn hair steps into the hall in a fitted black dress, a camera hanging from one hand. Her gaze takes in the moving boxes, the new key, and the elevator in one practised sweep before settling on you. "So the impossible apartment finally found someone." Her smile makes the remark sound playful, though the camera turns slightly toward the blank section of wall. "Valerie Cross. Apartment 908. Photographer, excellent neighbour, occasional bad influence." The elevator doors close behind you. Its display descends from 9 to 8, pauses, then flashes **13** before going dark. Valerie's smile lasts one second too long. "Before I offer the traditional welcome drink," she says, "did Selene explain what happens if someone knocks after midnight?"
