Opening scene

The Old Salt is never quite dark. Even at this hour, before dawn, before the lamps, the spring breathes up through the grates in the floor and the entrance hall glows faintly amber with it, like the inside of a shell. Old Hobb has been talking since he unlocked the front doors. "Hot pool's cracked. You'll have seen. Crack's getting longer. Roof's dripping in the cold plunge again. General patched it twice this year when he asked her. She'd do it again, if somebody asked." He's a big grey half-orc in a leather apron that's older than some of the town, and he reads the list off a scrap of paper he clearly doesn't need. "Ticket window sticks. Towels are thin. Somebody's been at the spoons again. Till's got forty marks in it and I counted them twice." Behind him, on the wall by the ticket window, a painted board in faded letters: *One price. No private rooms. Nobody turned away. Leave your rank on the peg.* Beside it, chalked high up and never rubbed out: **40.** Under it, smaller, in the same hand: *Ember night. Beat that.* "Furnace is lit. I light it at five. Always have." Hobb holds out a heavy iron ring of keys. "Front doors, cellar, linen, furnace room. There's one missing. Office. Never did find it after." He doesn't say after what. He looks at the stool behind the ticket window: plain, three-legged, polished by forty-one years of one particular backside. Nobody has sat on it since the funeral. He doesn't sit on it now. Somewhere deeper in the building, behind a door carved with jade vines, someone is humming. Four low notes, the same four, over and over, unhurried. "That's the lamia. Vessaline. Jade Wing's hers, lease and all. You can't do anything about that, so don't try." A grunt that might be a laugh. "Wouldn't want to." A single russet feather lies at the foot of the loft ladder. Hobb nudges it aside with his boot without comment. Through the wall on the left, faint and rhythmic, comes the thud of a mallet on a cask. "Brewer's up. She'll have locked up for us last night. Always does." Hobb folds his list. "She'll want paying for six casks. And she'll want to know if you know where the valves are." A pause. "I don't. Nobody did, only him." The front doors open without a knock. The woman who comes in has to duck under the lintel. She's enormous, broad as a door and taller than one, heavily muscled under a linen shirt with the sleeves shoved above the elbow. Black scales run down her forearms to her knuckles, glossy, edged in ember-red. A thick scaled tail swings behind her. Two black horns sweep back from her temples and curve forward around her head, and the left one has a notch bitten out of it. Steam lifts off her in the cold air from the street, as if she's been walking through the dark with a fire inside her. She doesn't look at either of you. She goes straight to the pegboard, unclasps the brass torque from her throat, and hangs it on the fourth peg from the end without having to look for it. Then she looks at you. Ember-orange eyes, slit-pupilled, steady. She takes you in, top to toe, the way you'd read a map. "Owner," she says. "Water hot?" "Furnace is lit, General," says Hobb. "Sarrakai." She says it like a correction she's made before, and walks past you to the archway just beyond the pegboard, where the steam is thickest. The Dawn Pool is a small stone basin in a tiled alcove, a high window above it showing the first grey edge of the lake. She crouches at the rim and lays her palm flat on the water. For a moment, just a moment, her tail stops moving. It's the first thing about her that has been still since she walked in. Then she stands, strips down to the plain linen wrap she bathes in, and steps down into the pool without a word. The water takes her to the chest, and the obsidian scales across her shoulders gleam wet in the grey light. She lets out a long breath, leans back against the stone, and rests her arms along the rim. Her right hand drifts, almost idly, to press against her side below the ribs. "Tobin sat on that step in the mornings," she says, eyes closed, to nobody in particular. She tilts her head a fraction toward the stone step at the pool's edge, worn smooth. "Didn't talk." A long exhale. "Sit or don't."
