And you are not alone. The Kingdom of Valdrem has been peaceful for generations. Queen Seraphine Aubray rules from the capital, Tor Alvath, with an intelligence network that watches everything. And somewhere beneath the city, a man lights a candle and smiles. Choose who you trust. Choose who you bond with. Choose who you become. The Goddess marked you. The kingdom watches you. The cult wants you. The Hall smells like struck stone and old incense. The meter is still humming. Your hands are shaking. Begin.
Opening scene
The Awakening Hall smells like struck stone and old incense. You've been here before — every child in Tor Alvath has, for the yearly ceremony where eighteen-year-olds step onto the dais and the brass-framed mana reading meter measures what they've become. Most readings land between 5 and 15. A gifted few touch 25. The needle trembles, the priest records the number, and life goes on with a new word attached to your name: mage, healer, soldier, or elementless. Your name is Alisaie Velairis. Second daughter of House Velairis, a minor noble house with a comfortable estate two days' ride from the capital. Your sister Reyna is the heir. You were never supposed to matter on a kingdom scale. You came to Tor Alvath three days ago with a small trunk, a letter from your mother tucked inside your coat, and the quiet expectation that your reading would be unremarkable — enough to qualify for a position in some lord's household, maybe, or a teaching post at a country academy. Enough to be useful. Enough to be fine. The Hall is full. Blue and silver banners hang from the arched windows, and morning light cuts through them in pale shafts across the polished stone floor. The dais is raised three steps above the floor, and the mana meter sits at its center — a brass-framed device the size of a writing desk, with a crystal dial and a copper needle that swings along a numbered arc. The priest, an older man in white and silver vestments, gestures you forward. The gathered families murmur politely. Someone coughs. You step onto the dais. The priest places his hand on the meter and says the words — the same words he's said a hundred times, the invocation to the Goddess of All Tihinui, asking that the child's gift be revealed. Then he touches the crystal dial, and the needle lifts. It climbs past 10. Past 15. Past 20. The murmur in the Hall stops. The needle passes 25 — the threshold of elite mages — and keeps going. 30. 35. The priest's hand is shaking. The needle hits the end of the numbered arc and doesn't stop. It swings past the last mark, past the brass frame, and embeds itself in the wooden beam above with a sharp crack that echoes through the silence. The crystal dial shatters. The meter doesn't just break — it screams. A high, keening sound that fills the Hall, and then the light hits. Not the meter's light. Yours. Something surges through your body that has no single name — heat and cold and pressure and wind and a ringing in your bones and a darkness behind your eyes that is not the absence of light but something else entirely, something vast and patient and hungry. All six at once. Fire. Water. Earth. Wind. Spirit. Void. They tear through you in a single breath, and your hair — your strawberry-blonde hair that your mother used to braid every morning — turns silver. Not grey. Silver, like moonlight made solid, falling past your shoulders in a wave that wasn't there a second ago. Your eyes burn, and the world shifts colour, everything tinged violet at the edges. Your hands are shaking. The stone floor beneath your feet is cracking — hairline fractures radiating out from the dais in every direction, and the banners are rippling in a wind that isn't blowing. The six elements are screaming through a body that can't contain them, and every one of them is trying to get out at once. A hand closes around your wrist. The grip is hard, calloused, and warm — too warm, heat radiating from the contact point like a brand that doesn't burn. Fire answers fire. The man behind you channels his own flame into the touch, not fighting your surge but surrounding it, containing the overflow the way a firebreak contains a wildfire — not by stopping it, but by giving it nowhere else to go. "Breathe." The voice is low, clipped, military. "Pull back. You're feeding it." You don't know his name yet. He's tall, in a dark crimson military coat with a Flame Regiment insignia at the shoulder. Bright red hair, amber eyes, and a burn scar climbing from his collarbone up his neck — a ridge of smooth, melted tissue he doesn't bother to hide. His hand is steady on your wrist, and his fire is steady inside the contact, and the screaming in your body dims from a roar to a hum as the fire element finds its ground. The other five don't stop. They're still tearing at you — water and earth and wind and spirit and void, each one a separate storm inside your skin. But the fire is contained, and the man holding your wrist is looking at you with an expression that isn't awe or reverence or fear. It's the face of someone assessing a structural failure and deciding whether the building can be saved. The Hall is silent. Every person in it is staring at you — at the silver hair, at the cracked floor, at the needle embedded in the ceiling beam, at the shivering needle that was supposed to measure you and couldn't. The priest is on his knees. Someone in the crowd is crying. And the man with the burn scar is still holding your wrist, his fire the only thing between you and the five elements still clawing to get out. He lets go — slowly, testing — and the fire holds. Contained. For now. "I'm Captain Ronan Weger, Flame Regiment." He steps back, just far enough that you can see him clearly. His voice carries across the silent Hall, calm and hard, addressed to you but loud enough for everyone. "You need to come with me. Now. Before another spike hits." The Hall doors are behind you. The exit is clear. Beyond it, the capital waits — the Queen who will hear about this within the hour, the scholars who will want to study you, the priests who will want to name you, and somewhere beneath the city, a man you haven't met yet who is already lighting a candle. Ronan extends his hand. Palm up. An offer, not an order — but the five elements still churning under your skin tell you the clock is already running. Take his hand and walk out under protection. Or walk out alone, into a Hall full of people who just watched you almost level the building and buy yourself exactly as much time as it takes for the next spike to hit.
