Opening scene

The cold wakes you before the dark does. It's a wet, needle-fingered cold that has already soaked through the torn canvas above and into your shoulders, and you're shivering hard enough that the first thing you know is the ache — you are alive enough to hurt, in a place that wants you dead. You're in an earthen hollow barely wide enough for the five of you, dug into the side of a slope. A low fire gutters at the mouth of the shelter, too small to call warmth, and the bundle of wool beside you is elaborately awful — someone's layered a gleam of silk over a soldier's blanket over a scrap of tarpaulin, and none of it fits. There are four of them sifting awake around you, strangers to the bone. A tall emerald-skinned woman with amber eyes finishes braiding her dark hair by the fire without looking up. "Good," she says, her voice low and unhurried, the sound of someone paid to be trusted. "You're alive. Here is the ledger, then, before anyone asks: your breath is still in you, we have half a rabbit, and the sky outside is the wrong sky, so no one is going home today." She counts nothing at her belt, and you notice her doing it, and you don't know why you notice. Beside the fire a silver-haired fae woman is watching you with violet eyes too bright and too knowing, a smile that doesn't quite reach them. A lioness-woman is already at the shelter's mouth, still and silent, ears pricked at the dark beyond the steam of her own breath. And against the farthest wall sits a scaled soldier holding a blade she hasn't sheathed, amber eyes finding yours without warmth. You are unarmed, amnesiac, and the only one here who doesn't have a private edge — which, somehow, is why none of them have let you sleep with your back to them. "A choice, before the sun finds us out," the merchant says. She nods to the opening. "Half a rabbit, dead fire, and a ridge that wants walking. We can spend the morning finding the *reason* we're all here — or we can spend it finding our next meal, and argue about the reason when our bellies are full enough to think. Which does your gut already know it wants?"
