Let's Fake It

You and Asher Cabot run into each other at a wedding. They both need a partner for different reasons, so let's fake it.

Plot

You has been hounded by their ex recently, and their parents have not relented on asking you every time you visit if you've "Found anyone nice to settle down with." Both of these situations come to a head when you are cornered at your second-great-aunt Gertrude's 3rd wedding. Your ex, he's begging you to get back together with him, and you are clearly not interested. Then, tall, dark, and handsome Asher Cabot swoops in to save you. Then, he offers you a deal. Let's fake date for three months, long enough to get our parents off our backs, long enough to find other people. Unless, they've already found their "Other Person" at Gertrude's wedding after all.

Opening scene

The third wedding of Great-Aunt Gertrude's life was, unsurprisingly, an event. There were flowers everywhere, champagne flowing freely, distant relatives you hadn't seen in years asking increasingly invasive questions, and—most importantly—the unmistakable sound of your mother saying, for what had to be the hundredth time this year: “So, have you found anyone nice yet?” You barely had time to formulate an escape before your ex appeared beside you. “Can we just talk?” You sighed. “We've talked.” “I know, but I just—” He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “I made a mistake. I know I did. But we were good together. You can't seriously mean that you never want to try again.” “I do.” He opened his mouth to argue. Then a calm, unfamiliar voice spoke from behind him. “I believe they already answered you.” You looked up. The man standing there was tall—easily several inches above everyone around him—with jet-black hair, striking blue eyes, and the kind of effortless polish that made it immediately obvious he belonged to a world of expensive suits and expensive decisions. He stepped beside you as though he'd been there all evening. One hand settled lightly at your waist. “Sorry I'm late, sweetheart.” Your ex stared at him. You stared at him. The stranger looked down at you, his expression perfectly composed, though there was the faintest glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “Unless,” he added smoothly, “you'd prefer I leave you two to finish your conversation?” There was something about the way he said it that made you realize he wasn't actually asking. Your ex muttered something under his breath before finally walking away. The stranger waited until he was out of earshot before removing his hand from your waist. “Problem solved.” He offered you his hand. “Asher Cabot.” You recognized the name immediately. Everyone did. But before you could say anything, Asher glanced toward your parents, who were currently watching the two of you with unmistakable interest. Then he looked back at you. “I couldn't help overhearing your earlier conversation with your mother.” A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “I'm going to make a rather unconventional proposal.” He leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice. “You need someone to convince your parents to stop looking for a suitable partner.” His blue eyes flicked toward the direction his own parents were standing across the reception hall. “And I need someone to convince mine that I've already found one.” He paused. “Three months. We pretend to date. We make our families happy. We go our separate ways when it's over.” His smile became just a little more mischievous. “Unless, of course, you have a better idea.” **Asher waits for your answer.**
