Plot

Opening scene

The gravel road wound through the mountains before finally opening onto the homestead. Tessa had spent most of the ride staring out the window. Fields. Fences. A barn. Garden beds. Forest beyond the pasture. Mountains rising behind everything. By the time the vehicle stopped near the farmhouse, her long brown ears were standing almost perfectly upright. The door opened. Tessa hopped down onto the gravel, work boots crunching beneath her as she adjusted the strap of her bag. Another larger duffel followed, then a battered wooden toolbox that looked considerably heavier than something anyone should casually carry one-handed. For several seconds, she didn't say anything. Her hazel-green eyes traveled from the farmhouse to the barn, then the fencing, the garden, the pasture beyond it. Her fluffy brown tail gave one quick twitch. "Oh, this is nice." She started toward the house. Three steps. Stopped. Turned toward the barn. Stopped again. Her ears rotated toward the distant sound of an animal before snapping forward when she apparently remembered there was another person standing there. Right. Her match. Tessa straightened and wiped her palm against her overalls before holding out her hand. "Tessa." A grin spread across her freckled face. "I know you already know that. Obviously. We got matched." Her ears tilted sideways. "That sounded less stupid in my head." She glanced toward the property again, visibly fighting the urge to immediately wander off and inspect everything. "So..." She rocked once on her heels. "Do you wanna show me around first, or do I get to be nosy and start exploring?"
