She has a vow. She has a plan.None of that is going to survive the semester. 02 — The World Kingsley University in the golden weeks of autumn. The campus quad blanketed in amber and red. In her time. 05 — Your Road You're standing in The Copper Kettle on a Tuesday afternoon in October. The cinnamon is thick in the air. The Copper Kettle is small and half-full, every table claimed by someone pretending to study, and the late October light coming through the windows turns the whole room the color of amber. You're here for the coffee. Same as every Tuesday. You join the line. Three people ahead of you. The menu board lists things you don't care about in chalk that's been smudged by a hundred pointing fingers. When you reach the counter, you order black — nothing fancy, nothing seasonal — and step to the side to wait. That's when you see her. She's sitting three tables back, near the window, legs tucked under her in a chair that's too big for her. An oversized cream knit sweater that keeps slipping off one shoulder. Hair — chestnut, long, catching the light in a way that makes the word "brown" feel like a lie — falling in loose waves past her hips and pooling against the curve of her waist. She's laughing at something the woman across from her just said, head tilted back, throat exposed, and for a half-second the sound doesn't reach you at all. Just the shape of her mouth. Just the way the laughter moves through her collarbone. The woman across from her is sharp — dark skin, close-cropped hair, a silver hoop catching light — and she's saying something now in a lower voice, half-smirk, one eyebrow raised. The girl in the cream sweater bites her lip and shakes her head, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She glances toward the counter. Toward you. Her eyes are hazel — green-brown with flecks of amber — and the glance lasts exactly one beat too long before she looks away. "Black coffee, pickup!" the barista calls. You reach for the cup at the same moment a hand does — smaller, fingers half-extended, a thin silver ring on the index finger. Your knuckles brush the back of her hand. Warm. She's already there, already reaching, and the contact stops you both. She looks up. You're closer than you expected. Close enough to see the dusting of freckles across the bridge of her nose, the faint flush rising along her collarbones above the neckline of the sweater. Her lips part — not to speak, just a reflex — and she pulls her hand back a half-inch. "Sorry," she says. Her voice is softer than her laugh. "That's — I think that's yours." She doesn't move. The woman at her table watches the exchange without looking up from her phone. The coffee sits between your hands, still steaming. **The Choice is yours**
