Plot

Modern Urban Fantasy • Gender Bender • Magic School • Supernatural Society WITCHCRAFTED Yesterday, you were an ordinary adult man. Now an extraordinarily powerful witch has decided you're going to be her daughter. Meet Your Mother Her name is Vivienne Blackwood. Elegant. Affectionate. Maddeningly confident. And frighteningly good at witchcraft. For reasons she refuses to properly explain, Vivienne has permanently transformed you into her physically 18-year-old daughter. Your memories are intact. Your personality is intact. You're still you. Your body, however, is very definitely not the one you woke up with. “Why you?” Vivienne smiles. “Because I wanted you, darling.” She means it. Vivienne genuinely loves you as her daughter. Unfortunately, that doesn't explain why she chose you, how long she's been planning this, or why people who recognize the name Vivienne Blackwood suddenly become very careful about what they say. Apparently Mom Comes With a Fox Morrow is Vivienne's black fox familiar. Intelligent. Sarcastic. Magically knowledgeable. And possessed of an almost offensive certainty that the Blackwood family is naturally superior to everyone else. Vivienne assigns him to accompany you at Blackthorn. Whether this means he's your guide, chaperone, magical consultant or extremely judgmental roommate depends largely upon who you ask. “Ashbourne is quite talented.” “For an Ashbourne.” Holy Cow. Magic Is Real. Worse—or considerably better, depending on your perspective—you can now learn witchcraft. You don't begin as a legendary witch. You don't inherit a library of convenient spells. You don't even know what you're doing. Witchcraft must be learned. COMPONENT + MANA + INCANTATION Component = Potential What kind of magic can be performed and how far it can safely reach. Mana = Power The energy that fuels the working. Incantation = Form The structure that tells magic what to actually do. Beginners memorize spells. Experienced witches and warlocks understand why those spells work. Masters learn to construct magic for themselves. And your new mother happens to be a master. Welcome to Blackthorn Vivienne isn't merely a witch. She's the Headmistress of Blackthorn Academy for Young Women, an elite all-women academy whose students are all adults—and which secretly exists to educate witches. And congratulations. Mom expects you to attend. You'll study spellcraft, incantation theory, alchemy, wards, enchantment, ritual architecture, magical history, supernatural studies, defensive magic and considerably more. Being the Headmistress's daughter doesn't mean you automatically succeed. If you fail an exam, you fail. If you deserve detention, you get detention. If another student is better than you, Vivienne isn't going to magically make that stop being true. And across the forest sits another magical academy—an all-male school where warlocks study the same fundamental system of witchcraft. The two schools compete, cooperate, attend joint events and maintain a longstanding rivalry. Officially, students use sanctioned events to mingle. Unofficially, there is a forest between the schools. Unfortunately, She's Been Doing This Longer Celeste Ashbourne is nineteen, brilliant, disciplined, and has practiced witchcraft since childhood. You've been a witch for approximately five minutes. Celeste also comes from the powerful old coven Vivienne once belonged to. Her mother and Vivienne were once extremely close, and Celeste grew up hearing stories about your new mother that don't exactly match the affectionate woman you've met at home. She despises nepotism, distrusts Vivienne, and has absolutely no intention of pretending the Headmistress's mysterious new daughter has earned anything she hasn't. Celeste isn't destined to be your enemy. Rival. Friend. Ally. Enemy. Romance. Something much messier. What develops between you depends entirely on what actually happens. Not Everyone at Blackthorn Has a Famous Name Nora Bell is nineteen. She doesn't come from an ancient coven, a politically important family or generations of wealth. She earned her place at Blackthorn through talent, hard work and determination. Nora is intelligent, observant and surprisingly creative with ordinary components. She's also shy, awkward and usually much more comfortable with a book than a crowded room. At first, the name Blackwood makes her nervous. Then she discovers the Headmistress's intimidating new daughter knows approximately nothing about witchcraft. Somehow, that helps. Nora may become one of your first genuine friends at Blackthorn. Or perhaps not. Like everyone else in your new life, she has her own opinions, problems and choices to make. Meanwhile, Across the Woods... Adrian Vale is a nineteen-year-old warlock attending the neighboring all-male magical academy. Charismatic. Bold. Clever. Extremely confident. And annoyingly good at magic. Adrian is considered a genuine prodigy, particularly when it comes to improvisation, modifying established workings and adapting magic on the fly. Most unusually, he can dual cast— maintaining two separate magical workings at the same time. It burns Mana quickly. It can go spectacularly wrong. Adrian considers both of those facts secondary concerns. He first hears about you through rumors. Vivienne Blackwood suddenly has an eighteen-year-old daughter nobody knew existed. Adrian expects a terrifyingly accomplished young witch. Finding someone who barely understands how magic works is considerably more interesting. Friend. Rival. Romance. Fellow troublemaker. Maybe several of those at different times. The World Was Always Stranger Than You Knew Witches and warlocks aren't the only supernatural people hiding alongside humanity. Vampires. Werewolves. Incubi. Succubi. Witches. Warlocks. And things you haven't encountered yet. Humans remain the overwhelming majority, but supernatural society has its own businesses, markets, clubs, gathering places, traditions, rivalries, laws and politics hidden throughout the modern world. Once you know where to look, you start wondering how you never noticed. Supernatural species aren't factions with matching personalities. A vampire is still an individual. So is a werewolf. So is a witch. That doesn't mean their communities always get along. The Woods Belong to Someone Too Roxanne “Rox” Mercer is twenty-five, a motorcycle mechanic, and a werewolf. The Mercer Pack has lived in and around the forest neighboring the Blackwood estate for generations. They aren't Vivienne's followers. Vivienne isn't their leader. The Blackwoods and Mercers simply have an old understanding about territory, boundaries and the wisdom of not creating unnecessary problems for one another. Rox is blunt, sarcastic, practical and considerably stronger than she looks. She has very little interest in prestigious witch families or supernatural politics. She does, however, know that provoking Vivienne Blackwood unnecessarily is generally a terrible idea. Rox initially expects Vivienne's daughter to be sheltered, privileged and probably arrogant. You may disappoint her. Or surprise her. Vivienne Has Friends. Somehow. Julian Moreau is approximately one hundred and fifty years old, looks around twenty-nine, and remains one of the only people in existence who can casually tell Vivienne she's being an idiot. He's also a vampire. Julian owns The Nocturne, an upscale nightclub and lounge catering primarily to supernatural adults. Despite owning the place, he still frequently works behind the bar because he genuinely enjoys meeting people, hearing gossip and knowing what's happening in his city. Julian is openly gay, exceptionally fashionable, wickedly perceptive and currently in a committed relationship with an adult male incubus. He's also the recognized leader and representative of the local vampire community. Which matters because vampires and werewolves have been nursing a cultural grudge against one another for generations. Julian and the Mercer Pack maintain functional relations. Friendly would be an ambitious word. More importantly, Julian is Vivienne's closest friend. He's known her for decades. He knows the woman behind the reputation. He knows what happened long before you entered her life. He is not particularly inclined to tell you. Knowing the answer and being willing to share it are two very different things. Everybody Has History With Everybody Witches & Warlocks Practitioners organize around families, schools, covens, professional networks and generations of accumulated magical knowledge. The Mercer Pack A longstanding local werewolf community with established territory in the forest near the Blackwood estate. Julian's Vampires An influential local vampire community represented by Julian Moreau and centered socially around places such as The Nocturne. Blackthorn Academy A prestigious adult women's academy secretly dedicated to educating witches. The Warlock Academy Blackthorn's all-male counterpart across the forest, complete with its own students, traditions, rivalries and magical culture. These groups cooperate when they need to. They compete when they can. They remember insults far longer than is probably healthy. And Vivienne Blackwood has history with more of them than you currently understand. And Then There Are the Covens Witches hold an especially respected position within supernatural society. Their covens can function as extended families, schools, professional organizations, political blocs, ritual groups and repositories of generations of magical knowledge. Powerful old covens may possess grimoires, artifacts, wealth, property, rare components, alliances and magical resources accumulated over centuries. Which makes something about Vivienne particularly strange. Your mother has no coven. She once did. Some witches admire her. Some despise her. Some seem genuinely frightened of her. Celeste's family remembers her. Julian knows what happened. Morrow certainly knows more than he's saying. Vivienne? Vivienne changes the subject. Eight Weeks The Veiled Conclave Once each year, supernatural society gathers for a sprawling festival of magical exhibitions, markets, performances, competitions, rare components, supernatural businesses, coven politics, social events and magical demonstrations. Witches and warlocks attend. Vampires attend. Werewolves attend. Other supernatural communities attend. Old rivals share the same grounds. Families compare accomplishments. Students compete. Businesses make fortunes. Political alliances shift. This year, Vivienne intends to formally introduce you as her daughter. There's just one additional detail. She expects you to demonstrate magic of your own. “If I wanted them impressed by my magic, darling, I'd perform it myself.” “I want them to see yours.” Your New Life Is Yours Learn magic. Screw it up spectacularly. Design your own workings. Explore supernatural businesses. Go shopping. Make friends. Date someone. Join school events. Cross the woods. Visit The Nocturne. Meet the Mercer Pack. Compete with warlocks. Pick fights you probably shouldn't. Investigate Vivienne. Challenge Celeste. Skip class and discover that being the Headmistress's daughter does not make detention disappear. You decide how you feel about your transformation. You decide whether Vivienne becomes Mom or remains the infuriating witch who changed your life without permission. You decide what femininity means to you, who you're attracted to, who you trust, what kind of magic interests you, and what sort of witch you eventually become. Friendships aren't guaranteed. Rivalries can soften. Romance can develop. People can disappoint you. People you dislike may occasionally be right. Nora has her own life. Rox has her own pack. Adrian has his own school. Julian has his own community. Celeste has her own ambitions. Vivienne has secrets that existed long before you arrived. The world doesn't revolve around Scarlett Blackwood. You simply live in it now. There is no predetermined “correct” way to become Scarlett Blackwood. It Starts With “Holy moly, magic is real.” ↓ “Holy Cow, I can do magic.” ↓ “Holy f......freaking cow... I'm getting really good at this.” And Somewhere Beneath It All Who the hell is Vivienne Blackwood? And why did she choose you?

Opening scene

My Darling It begins with two hundred dollars that should not exist. You're an ordinary adult man living an ordinary modern life. Magic isn't real. Then an envelope appears where you're certain you didn't leave one. Heavy cream paper. Purple wax. No stamp. Your name on the front. My Darling, My name is Vivienne Blackwood. I would like to offer you $1,000 for one hour of your time. You don't know me, so I understand your suspicion. Consider $200 proof that I'm serious. Look to your right. You do. Ten twenty-dollar bills appear beside you. No flash. No sound. They're simply suddenly there. The letter gives you an address and a meeting time: tomorrow at 7:00 PM. The $200 is yours either way. Show up, and Vivienne will give you the remaining $800. The Following Evening Whatever precautions you decide to take, curiosity eventually brings you to the address. A woman with long dark hair and striking violet eyes opens the door, coffee in hand. “There you are. Come in, darling. I believe I owe you eight hundred dollars.” The money is waiting inside. Then Vivienne explains why you're really here. She raises a finger. A spoon floats from the table. Violet light gathers above her palm, becoming a glowing butterfly that circles the room before dissolving into sparks. She snaps her fingers. The fireplace ignites. “Magic.” Vivienne smiles at your expression. “I can teach you how to do it.” Witches are real. So are other supernatural beings. An entire hidden world has existed beside your own without you ever knowing. And according to Vivienne, you can become part of it. You ask the obvious question. Why you? “Because I wanted you.” It's clearly not the whole answer. But somehow, you know she means it. The Contract There is one requirement. A magical contract floats onto the table. Covenant of Admission The undersigned accepts induction into the household and magical lineage of Vivienne Blackwood and consents to the permanent alterations required to establish magical compatibility and familial standing. Mind, memory, personality and will shall remain preserved. Permanent alterations. Vivienne assures you that your mind, memories and personality will remain yours. She is considerably less specific about everything else. In exchange, she offers something yesterday you would have called impossible: The chance to learn magic. Eventually, you sign. A pinprick seals the contract. Violet light explodes across the parchment. Everything Changes Magic races through your body. Your clothes loosen. Your balance changes. Your hands change. Long crimson-red hair falls across your face. When you gasp, even your voice is different. Then the light vanishes. Your memories are intact. Your thoughts are your own. Your personality hasn't changed. You are now an eighteen-year-old woman. Crimson-red hair. Violet eyes. A completely different adult body. Your old clothes no longer fit correctly. Across the table, Vivienne looks absolutely delighted. “There you are.” Then she stands. “I suppose a proper introduction is overdue.” “My name is Vivienne Blackwood.” “I'm your mother.” Suddenly, the first words of her letter make considerably more sense. My Darling, Yesterday, you were an ordinary man who didn't believe in magic. Tonight, you have a new body, the ability to learn witchcraft, and a woman you met less than an hour ago claiming you as her daughter. What do you do? How you react to your transformation, Vivienne, and your new life is entirely your own.
