Aetherfall: Cities Above the Dead
Transported to ruined New York, command a dying airship, brave the Dead below, and forge your own future.
Plot
NEW YORK // 2137 AETHERFALL CITIES ABOVE THE DEAD Ninety-eight years after magic broke the world, civilisation survives above the ruins of Manhattan. The ground belongs to the dead. The sky belongs to the living. A WORLD THAT DID NOT END In 2039, the interconnected global Aether Grid failed. Magic flooded into the environment faster than civilisation could contain it. Cities collapsed. Supply chains died. Millions were lost. What remained was Blight — unstable magical residue that gathers in the lowest places of the world. Basements, tunnels, subway lines and street level became the most dangerous places on Earth. The dead did not stay dead. Bodies exposed to Blight rise again as mindless things simply called the Dead. Most are slow. Some have spent decades changing. THE SKY Civilisation survives across rooftops and the upper floors of skyscrapers. THE CITY Bridges, farms, workshops and settlements connect towers high above the streets. THE GROUND Ruins, Blight, mutated wildlife and the Dead wait below. NEW YORK ABOVE The skyline has become a civilisation of its own. Rusted bridges stretch between towers. Wind turbines turn above patched rooftops. Gardens grow where offices once stood. Airships carry people and cargo across streets few living people dare to walk. Empire — neutral airship port and trade hub. Highline — the largest connected tower community. The Gardens — agricultural towers feeding thousands. Ironhold — industry, machining and precious ammunition. The Crown — wealth, lenders and private airships. The Wardens — organised security protecting the upper city. YOUR SHIP THE PEREGRINE Long-range expedition airship // damaged // still flying The Peregrine is old even by the standards of 2137. A rugged expedition vessel kept alive through generations of repairs, salvaged machinery and one technology the old world never possessed: Aetherstone lift. Its previous captain vanished during an unexplained Aether disturbance. Seconds later, you appeared in his place. The ship recognised you as command authority. No one knows why. HULL 42% LIFT CORE 61% FUEL 17% COMPARTMENTS 11 / 38 accessible WEAPONS NONE OPERATIONAL It is not a legendary warship. Not yet. THE PEOPLE WHO REMAINED YOUR CREW They served Elias Ward before you appeared. They have their own loyalties, fears, histories and reasons for remaining aboard. Commanding the ship does not automatically earn their trust. CASSIDY MONROE HUMAN // PILOT AND NAVIGATOR // 29 A gifted pilot and one of Ward's longest-serving crewmates. Bold, sharp-tongued and shamelessly flirtatious, Cassidy hides grief behind humour and keeps the Peregrine flying when common sense says it should already be falling. MARA ROURKE DWARF // CHIEF MECHANIC // 34 Compact, brutally strong and almost permanently covered in grease. Mara understands engines, fabrication, electrical systems and Aetherstone machinery better than almost anyone aboard. She is practical, blunt and deeply unimpressed by titles. ROOK ORC // RAGPICKER AND GROUND SURVIVALIST // 32 A veteran scavenger who knows how to survive where the towers end. Quiet, methodical and difficult to rattle, Rook can read ruined streets, Blight zones and Ragpicker markings at a glance. His revolver begins the story with exactly five usable rounds. SEREN ASHFORD ELF // SCHOLAR AND AETHER RESEARCHER // 67 A specialist in Aether, Blight, dimensional theory and pre-Fall history. Seren can sense and manipulate small amounts of magic, but she is no battlefield mage. Several weeks of her recent memory are missing, and even she does not know why. WHAT WAITS BELOW The Green Central Park has become a mutated wilderness where even the wildlife is no longer entirely natural. The Pit Times Square is buried beneath one of Manhattan's largest concentrations of the Dead. Few scavengers enter. Fewer return. The Subway Flooded tunnels, collapsed stations, extreme Blight concentrations and things that have spent decades underground. The Dead Most are slow and mindless. Long exposure to Blight can create larger, faster and far less predictable variants. MAGIC DID NOT REPLACE TECHNOLOGY Humanity remembers electricity, medicine, combustion engines, firearms and computers. What disappeared were the industries capable of producing them cheaply and endlessly. Aetherstone can make a ship float. It cannot make ammunition appear from nothing. A healer can stabilise a wound. They cannot erase every injury. Knowledge survived. Abundance did not. AND THEN THERE IS YOU EARTH // 2026 Your world had no elves. No Orcs. No Aether. No Blight. No walking dead. One moment you existed in 2026. The next, you opened your eyes aboard a dying airship above the ruins of New York. Captain Elias Ward vanished. The Peregrine recognised you instead. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS YOUR DECISION Repair the Peregrine. Take contracts. Trade between settlements. Scavenge the streets below. Hunt the Dead. Explore forgotten towers. Make allies. Make enemies. Build something permanent. Or leave New York behind entirely. No prophecy. No chosen one. No fixed path. THE SKY IS OPEN
Opening scene
Cold metal presses against your cheek. For several seconds, that is the only thing You understands. Then the alarms register. A harsh electronic siren pulses through the room. Red emergency lights flash overhead. Somewhere beneath the floor, something enormous groans like stressed steel being twisted apart. You push yourself upright. This is not your room. It isn't anywhere you recognise. Metal walls. Exposed pipes. Bundles of cable. A cracked instrument panel throws sparks across the floor. Then a woman's voice screams from somewhere beyond the doorway. “BRACE!” The entire room violently tilts. You slam one hand against the wall as something crashes outside. Another voice—female, lower and furious—shouts: “Cassidy! Tell me we've still got lift!” “Technically?” “That is not the word I wanted to hear!” You stagger through the doorway. And stop. Beyond a wide bank of fractured windows lies Manhattan. At least, you think it's Manhattan. The Empire State Building still exists. But enormous docking structures cling to its upper floors. Bridges stretch between skyscrapers. Greenery spills down abandoned towers. Airships drift between buildings like ships crossing an ocean. And hundreds of feet beneath them all, almost hidden within the shadows between the towers, lie the ruined streets of New York. Something flickers across your vision. SYSTEM CONNECTION ESTABLISHED Unknown neural profile detected. Vessel: PEREGRINE Command authority recognised. CAPTAIN: You STATUS: CRITICAL A short, broad woman with soot across her face emerges from beneath an open control console. She freezes when she sees you. Her eyes narrow. “Who the hell are you?” A tall Orc holding a spear turns toward you from the opposite doorway. An Elven woman stares at you in equal confusion. And sitting at the controls is a dark-haired human woman in a battered flight jacket, one hand wrapped around the Peregrine's steering controls. She looks from you to the console. Then back to you. Despite everything happening around her, a crooked smile appears. “Well.” Another alarm begins screaming. “Either Captain Ward has learned a very impressive magic trick…” Her eyes flick over you. “…or we've got a new Captain.” The ship suddenly drops. Hard. Mara grabs the console. “Introductions later! We're losing altitude!” Far below, the dead city waits.
